An annual Christmas tradition, in the FunderHaus is special movies time. “Christmas in Connecticut” and “White Christmas” and “The Bishop’s Wife” and a few others all lead up to “It’s A Wonderful Life.” And you might recall, in Wonderful Life, how George Bailey (aka: James Stewart) received a copy of Mark Twain’s “Tom Sawyer” at the end of the movie. Inside he read a handwritten note (from his friend, Clarence) “No man is a failure who has friends.”
Yeah, George found out he had a wonderful life full of friends.
And they weren’t Facebook friends, or Twitter followers, or other social media connections. No, George’s friends were real people who chose whether or not they’d be there for him when he reached the end of his rope. They couldn’t just hit a “like” button. Or insert a smiley face emoji.
In case you’ve never seen the movie (and if you haven’t, you must be mighty young) I won’t tell you if George’s friends step up or not. But I WILL tell you things get so bad for Mr. Bailey that he contemplates jumping off a bridge on a freezing cold night just before Christmas.
And that is, at best, a stupid option to contemplate.
Because this wonderful life is a gift.
And you and I received it from the best friend we could ever hope to have. He also happens to be the one who created human beings. So, it’s kind of a big deal that He considers us His friend.
We’re never gonna magically turn into an angel when some jingly bell rings. But for those of us who understand and trust where we came from and where we’re going, there’s something much better. A wonderful, forever life, in Heaven with our best friend.
What A Friend We Have In Jesus
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he’ll take and shield you; you will find a solace there.
