Back when I used to perform, nightly, in an island-themed restaurant, one of the crowd favorites was a song by Jimmy Buffett. The lyrics talked about volcanoes erupting and what would happen when they do. Words like, “Ground she’s movin’ under me…Tidal waves out on the sea…Sulphur smoke up in the sky…Pretty soon we learn to fly.”
And then the chorus said, “I don’t know where I’m a-gonna go when the volcano blow.”
If you’re a Jimmy Buffett fan (aka “parrot head”), then you’ve probably heard that song lots of times. And I can tell you I sure played it lots of times. Not as many times as “Margaritaville” (ay yi yi), but lots.
Anyway…
I didn’t show up, today, to talk about Mr. Buffett.
So, let me get back to those volcanoes erupting.
Did you know they shoot out almost a cubic mile of ash, lava, and other stuff every year? I knew it was a lot. But I didn’t know it was that much. Until I read it in Dr. Walt Brown’s book, “In the Beginning.” And he said that, “At this rapid rate, about 10 times the entire volume of Earth’s sedimentary rock should be produced in 4.5-billion years.”
But then he explained how “only about 25% of Earth’s sediments are of volcanic origin.”
And while that might still seem like a lot, it’s not how much should be there if volcanoes had been erupting for 4.5 billion years. Dr. Brown also shared how volcanoes blew their tops a lot more in the past. In other words, they’ve slowed down a lot in recent history.
I wrote and sang about the silliness of the theory of evolution in my song “Fast Forward.” And, in the bridge of the song, I asked…
So, what does it all mean?
And why should we care?
That we didn’t come from slime!
And there’s a God out there!
Yeah, worldviews matter. Because your idea or ideas for how we all got here can have eternal consequences. Bad theories lead to bad choices and bad consequences. But if you truly don’t care about any of that, then I hate to think about where you’re gonna go when the volcano blow.
