For several years I’ve shared this song on Independence Day (July 4). But I believe it’s even more appropriate for the holiday (HolyDay) Christians, around the world, are about to share. A day that marks what one tortured soul endured a long time ago. Not to become a martyr. And not for some crime or sinful action.
No. That tortured soul endured agony for ME.
Because, on my own, I’m a blind, naked, and poverty-stricken wretch. Yeah, I’ve messed up. And believe it or not, I’ve messed up more than once. Gasp! Yeah. On some level or another, I mess up every day. And I’m embarrassed to admit it. Because the truth hurts.
And that truth about me actually hurt THE Truth. Yeah, that’s one of His titles. He’s also known as The Way. And The Life. And He subdued all His magnificent power, for a while, so that human beings could hurt Him for what I did. Not just “hurt Him.” Torture Him. In ways I hate to imagine. Because it’s difficult to blur or erase those images from my mind.
Here’s the thing. I decided, when I was 13, to admit responsibility for my mistakes. And that didn’t turn the rest of my days into an impeccable, spotless example of how to live. Far from it. But my decision gave me a Compass I could trust to get me back on course every time I messed up.
Here’s one song I wrote based on that faith decision:
On a related note, that song isn’t directed at only me. Because whether you like it or not, you’re guilty, too. I don’t know if you’re more guilty or less. Doesn’t matter. Your guilt is real. And there’s only one Way you can spare yourself from being a tortured soul and have…
Freedom
Faith working through love…
Let’s praise God for our liberty…
Christ paid off our debt…
Only in Him are we truly free.
Love leads into joy…
Law leads back into slavery…
God gave us The Way.
Just believe, and we’re truly free.
Freedom from the law that kills,
Freedom with our own free wills,
And freedom from the world of sin…
Just let Jesus in, let the joy begin
Share a hopeful grin, with the Lord “We Win”!
Praise God for what we can become
With our freedom.
What law couldn’t do
Jesus did with finality.
He rose up from the dead
And promised the same life for you and me.
So we have…
Chorus…instrumental…chorus twice
