What’s this obsession with
the dark side of music?
I remember when I was growing up how music was so much about fun and storytelling and sharing reasons to be glad to be alive. Now, there’s just so much darkness to it all. Well, maybe not all…but so much of it that it seems that way sometimes.
For instance…I get Google email alerts for a variety of topics in the world of music. One of the alerts has to do with music licensing. And one of the listings I just saw was a publishing company looking for “Black Metal, Death Metal, Grime, Hard Rock, Hardcore, Heavy Metal, Metal, Post-Hardcore, Progressive, Screamo, Thrash”
Another one was looking for “Dark urban, dark country, & goth”
You know…maybe it reflects on how young people feel about their lives these days. Maybe they’re not very optimistic about their future. On that point I can’t say I blame them very much. After all the “people in charge” of the government are spending their money and even their kids’ money at an alarming pace.
Still…I’ve never made it my mission to put much stock in what politicians do or say. The vast majority lie even when the truth sounds better. And their whole purpose in life is self-preservation…of power, money, and control. You know what? Those are strong forces on the dark side. And that sort of powernomics definitely trickles down to the masses.
But…if you’re a young musician, singer-songwriter, or other artist, can a guy who’s been around the block a time or two when it comes to music pass on some advice? It’s just this: Look Up. Your days on this earth are a vapor in the grand expanse of time. You are an eternal being. Fearfully and wonderfully made. You didn’t happen by accident. So seek Truth on purpose.
And I promise you there are lots of reasons, found in Truth, to “banish the dark side and welcome the light…then you’ll win the never-ending fight.”
