I like the way you walk. Well, say that you’ll be true. Well, say that you’ll be mine. If you’ve been around long enough to recognize those three sentences, you’re (shall we say) not exactly a young person. Or you could be a young person who’s into vintage swamp rock.
Yeah, you read that right. Swamp rock.
And swamp rock didn’t originate in the U.S. congress. Even though the name might make you think it did. It didn’t. Now, I know you’re all distracted and you wanna go make a meme about swamp rock and congress. But stick with me for just a little bit. Your meme can wait.
Anyway…
Speaking of Susie Q (wait, were we speaking of Susie Q or was I just thinking out loud?), you probably didn’t know that Creedence Clearwater Revival didn’t write that song. If you thought they did, it’s a common mistake since they have the most famous version of it.
But actually it was written, at least in part, by Dale Hawkins. He recorded his version of it way back in the “rockabilly era” of 1957. And most people who know anything about him would probably tell you that’s just about his best known recording. Yeah, he was no Elvis or Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly.
Even though you might’ve never heard of him, Dale became a record producer. And I saw an article that said he worked with artists such as Michael Nesmith, Bruce Channel and Harry Nilsson. Michael Nesmith was a member of the Monkees. Bruce Channel had a hit with one of my oldies favorites, “Hey Baby.” And of course, I’m a big fan of Harry Nilsson. And that’s despite the fact that Greg Perry, the Ultra-advanced eBay Guy, likes him, too.
So, what am I rambling on and on about here?
Well, as it turns out Dale Hawkins died from colon cancer on this day, February 13, back in 2010. He was 73. Mr. Hawkins was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. I don’t know much more about him of any importance.
But when I read music history articles about musicians who left the planet, I always wonder if they’re singing a new song of joy now.
Or do they only hear never-ending tormented blues now?
Whichever it is, it’ll go on forever because of a choice they made while they were still here. I don’t know about you, but I say give me JOY. Sweet, never-ending new songs of JOY.
I will probably never be inducted into any hall of fame here in America. But I’m looking forward to the halls of Heaven where my name is in THE book of Life.
Who’s with me?
