“There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to, The Outer Limits.” That was part of the opening to the old TV show from back in the 60’s.
Boomers remember The Outer Limits.
Everybody else probably feels like they live in the outer limits now. Because the rest of that opening was all about control. Here’s the complete opening the invisible narrator said before each episode…
Most episodes were focused on science fiction. And they sort of resembled Japanese science fiction movies like Godzilla. Goofy looking creatures and such. But to young, impressionable minds of mush, they could be spookily entertaining.
Kinda like watching C-span these days.
But let’s not go there right now. Yeesh.
According to some information I’ve read, The Outer Limits had some influence on a subsequent TV show. A little, obscure production called Star Trek.
I’m a fan of those kinds of shows. I think I’m an even bigger fan of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Because it uses science fiction to parody and poke fun of science fiction shows. But all those shows “innocently” did something I think maybe they were intended to do.
Distract viewers from Truth.
If you enjoyed them, I’m not trying to ruin them for you. But I think it’s important to illustrate how they focused on human imagination and human creation. And right now, I want you to sit quietly while I control all that you see and read. There’s nothing wrong with your device. You’re about to participate in a great adventure. You’re going to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the written Word to Life Without Limits.
I’m gonna leave my cares and troubles far behind
I’m gonna live this brand new life that I’ve designed?
And I’m gonna love discovering which way to go.
I’m gonna laugh and then say yes instead of no.
(from my song, I’m Gonna)
