Even as a boy I was always fascinated by birds…and cloud formations, and shooting stars in a sky full of blinking lights. I wasn’t thinking about how focusing on things above me could keep my spirit uplifted. I just knew those things up there were amazing.

There’s a place in the Bible where it says to “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth“. Now, don’t get the idea that sentence is talking about birds or clouds or stars. You only need to go one verse before that to see the writer was talking about things far above…in fact, so far they’re found at the “right hand of God”. I’m guessing that’s a lot further and possibly a lot closer than we could ever imagine.

I find these days to be much more challenging to my body and spirit than ever before. Do you get that feeling, too? Could these be the last days of this age? Maybe. Maybe not. But either way, there can be no doubt that wars and rumors of wars, nation rising up against nation, famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in many different places are certainly all happening.

If you focus on these things on earth, you can easily and quickly get discouraged and disheartened about your life and the lives of the rest of the people on the planet.

That’s why God says to focus “on things above”.

Who can possibly save us from ourselves? Who can possibly turn things around and make them all new again? If there’s any doubt in your mind, I’ll say emphatically…God!

If you believe there is no God, and you’re living your life accordingly, you’d better be right. However, I suggest you set aside your human bias and open your mind to the possibility that the almost infinitely complex design in our universe points to an even more complex Designer. When your mind latches on to that, your dead spirit (and sense of hopelessness) will be reborn.

Then…it’ll be much easier to look up and focus “on things above”.
