Back when people were way more superstitious, they made up multiple gods to worship. No, I’m not talking about yesterday. Or the 2020 elections. Even further back. Like in the “ancient times.” OK, I realize younger people might think that’s the 1980’s. But these “ancient times” were hundreds of years ago.
Way back when so-called “Germanic” people created multiple gods.
And the top dog god (hey, that’s a palindrome…squirrel!) is a name you might recognize if you’re a fan of recent Thor movies. Odin. But here’s how languages get fascinating and jumbled up. Odin, in Old English (or is it Olde English) is Woden. And those wacky people back then named the fourth day of the week after him.
So, they came up with “day of Woden,” or “Woden’s Day.” And that became Wōdnesdæg. And, with weird letters and phonetics like that, we need to be grateful for the English who turned it into Wednesday.
Wait a sec. Come to think of it, that’s crazy, too. The good ol’ American English pronunciation is Wenzday, or Wenzdy. But either way you say it, the D gets left out. So, what’s up with that? Oh well, I don’t have time to sit around and worry about why we don’t say Wed ness day. It’s enough to be glad it isn’t Wōdnesdæg.
Depending on when you read this, it might not be immediately apparent why I’m talking about how the fourth day of the week got its name. But today (as I write this) is Wednesday.
People who struggle, or even glide, through a five day work week, call it Hump Day. I’ve called it “Whimsical Wednesday.” But today I’m just sharing a rhyme about when to start a positive attitude. And how the one, true, living, loving God of all creation vaporizes all the other multiple gods.
Wednesday.
I hope you don’t mind if I don’t join in
With the people who just naysay.
I think you might find, if you just begin,
You might feel the very same way.
Life can get real dark like a starless night.
So, be glad when the Lord sends day.
Go and make your mark without fear or fright.
And you might as well start Wednesday.
