I am NOT a liberal. Although I AM liberal. And that might seem confusing at first glance. But it makes total sense AND it’s the sensible way to be. But only when you understand the difference between the word, liberal, and what passes for liberal ideology. And, in that case, Inigo Montoya said it best, “You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.”
Liberal ideology flows from people whose brains spilled out.
Most people who fancy themselves to be “liberals” do so because they like the more current dictionary definitions. Like this: “(in a political context) favoring policies that are socially progressive and promote social welfare.”
After all, what kind of clear-thinking individual would oppose progress? And who, but a hater, would be against promoting social welfare?
Well, me.
“What?! You oppose progress and the welfare of others, Tony?!”
Yes. And I still use the adjective, liberal, to describe myself. But notice. I said “adjective.” Not noun. Because I vehemently oppose just about everything contained in liberal ideology. So, I absolutely can’t be called “a liberal.” Because it’s overflowing with hypocrisy.
But you know what?
For decades I’ve enjoyed what those pesky liberals can design. And what they bake and brew and build. Because so many “cool” sections of towns are controlled by liberals. And so many coffee shops are owned and managed by liberals. (Note: this excludes horribly decaying liberal cities)
For example, a while back, before iTunes became Apple Music, they offered access to a ton of internet radio stations. Free. With just a click you could listen to talk stations, cool and nouveau and smooth Jazz stations, and even Americana stations.
One, in particular, that I enjoyed often, was Martha’s Vineyard Radio. Or MVYRadio for short. Because they play an eclectic blend of songs from my past, old standards, and new stuff I’ve never heard but tend to appreciate.
Of course, they play some awful stuff, too. Songs that should never have made it to the airwaves. Pretty much every station does that. But, for the most part, I enjoy MVY Radio.
Hmm…Martha’s Vineyard. Not sure why I thought of them, today. Probably just because it’s a nice, clear day outside. And I heard an MVY Radio DJ say it was nice up there on Martha’s Vineyard Island, too. Plus they mentioned some of the wonderful Saturday morning activities going on today. People fishing. Farmer’s market. Live music in the park.
You know, good ol’ red, white, and blue Americana.
It’s the kind of stuff that inspires
My ebullient, liberal desires
To share with all people the reason why we exist.
From the moment I was conceived,
Everything that I ever received
Was liberally enriched by the one Biologist.
