Empty the ocean with a spoon? Yeah, that was a thought that rushed into my head one day back in the 1970’s. Because I was thinking about all the people in the world who give up too easily. And, at the same time, I thought about all the people in the world who would never give up.And I wanted to make sure I’d always be in that second group.
At the time, I wasn’t as aware of what Paul wrote to the Corinthians and Ephesians. He exhorted them to keep on keepin’ on. Run the race to win the prize. And never give up.
Even when it feels like you’re trying to empty the ocean with a spoon.
Imagine how impossible that would be. But it would be nothing more than a drop in the bucket to the Creator of the ocean. He could drain it with a whisper. And that’s the God I’ll put my faith in, thank you very much.
Empty the Ocean
The wall stands before us.
The fire burns behind us.
And the sky frowns upon us.
And the ground below us trembles.
Did you ever feel like saying I can’t make it?
Did you ever have a chance and passed it by?
Well, the world’s full of people who would empty the ocean
With a spoon in their hand and a light in their eye.
Our eyes seem to blacken.
Our minds tend to waver.
And our backs start to weaken.
And our legs begin to crumble.
Did you ever feel like saying what’s the use now?
Did you ever hear yourself say, “Let me die.”
Well, the world’s full of people who would empty the ocean
With a spoon in their hand and a light in their eye.
So, there’s just no need to worry,
If you think about the people
Who would empty the ocean with a spoon in their hand.
Did you ever hear a word and no one spoke it?
Did you ever see a star fall from the sky?
Well, the world’s full of people who are living on wishes.
But it’s also full of people with that light in their eye.
