I watched a video, on a YouTube channel, where the artist calls himself “The Virtual Instructor.” And that particular video was about how drawing on the right side of your brain helps you draw better. You can click or tap the links, below, if you’d like to watch his suggestion.
It’s based on the book, “Drawing On the Right Side of the Brain”
I think Betty Edwards‘ (author) original edition came out in 1979. But there have been revised editions released since then. And no matter which copy you get, it’s amazing how much the teaching in that book can help you draw. No matter how bad you are. At least, according to objective tests.
Because when you’re drawing on the right side of your brain, your logic is less likely to get in the way of your artistic side. And The Virtual Instructor, on YouTube, showed an example of how it works. He flipped a picture and drew his own rendition of the flipped picture.
When he finished, he flipped his drawing. And it was an excellent match.
But as I watched and listened, I couldn’t help but think about how human vision works. And it’s actually not your eyes that see. It’s your brain. Your eyes are where images go in. But those images are encoded into information. And your brain decodes that information. It’s WAY too complicated to have ever taken millions of years to evolve.
Imagine creatures with non-functioning eyes trying to get around without the immensely complicated eyeballs we all have now. How long would a species survive that only had certain parts, or certain functions, of its eyes? Certainly not millions of years. Duh.
Don’t forfeit the left side of your brain to fall for that nonsense.
I encourage you to exercise your brain from both sides. Drawing on the right can help jumpstart and pump up your creativity. And drawing from the left can help you know what to do with that creativity. And it’s all because you have a Creator who loves you enough to build you that way.
“When logic and reason
Don’t have their due season,
The lies end up long in the tooth.” (from the song, “We Win”)
