Poodle skirts. Roller skates. Hula hoops. What do they have in common? They were each the latest craze, at some point, back in the 1950’s. Then, you had The Twist, The Pony, and even the Monster Mash. Those were the “in” moves at some point in the 1960’s. Right now there’s the Distraction Dance. And it’s all the rage in political, social media, and video circles.Maybe you’ve even done the Distraction Dance.
It’s so easy. Any fool, uh, body can do it. Just go online, and visit just about any news, social media, or entertainment website, and that’s about all you need to get started.
One social media site, that purports to be the one true bastion of free speech is an example of what I mean. I was just on there a few minutes ago. And I saw multiple posts where users were in agreement that certain news stories are being whipped up to distract “us” from political shenanigans.
Then I scrolled down a few more posts. And I read about how (and why) Nazi swastika symbols are a-ok, how “certain people” don’t want you to know the Earth is flat, and how the Titanic wasn’t actually the ship that sank in the North Atlantic.
Yeah, that’s just the tip of the iceberg (pun absolutely intended) to the distraction dances I found. So many people respond to and comment on those kinds of posts, too. But not to say how silly sounding they are. No, the comments are usually some form of affirmations. Translate: lots of people think like that.
No one’s immune to distraction.
I’m guilty, at some level, basically every day. I’ll bet you are, too. But we can forgive ourselves (a little) because distractions are everywhere. And they come in all shapes, sizes, and degrees of wonderment.
And now you can’t be totally sure an actual human created the distraction. Yeah, artificial “intelligence” can “write” articles, “create” art, and produce content at a pace no humans can, well, keep pace with.
I have to admit, I’m impressed at how you can type in a “prompt” and some algorithmic process can pump out a very cool-looking picture. I’m not pleased (but still impressed) about how a similar process can write a song almost instantaneously.
I’ve watched some of that happen, in real time, and it’s SO fast. But it’s not real. And it’s void of human emotion (which isn’t always a bad thing). But even that’s not the worst part. Because so many humans seem to be void of human emotion, too. Well, the love your neighbor as yourself emotion anyway.
So, here’s my recommendation for today.
And you can take it or leave it, because you were created with your own will and ability to choose. Anyway, consider reducing the conspiracy, entertainment, and political distractions at least a little. And replace some of that time with a dive into Paul’s letters in the Bible. He wrote some amazing letters.
You might find yourself in a whole ‘nother frame of mind that feels just plain awesome. And you might find yourself drawn closer to your Creator. One of the times that happened to me, I wrote this…
Drawn To You
Maybe it’s Your grace. I don’t know.
It could be Your Word. I’m not sure.
But You have a way of refining my thoughts.
Your Will is my strength. Your Will is my cure.
Anytime it’s me making it up
Show me I’m wrong to just forget You.
You barely lift a finger, and You change my whole direction.
What else can I say? What more can I do?
I’m drawn to You
Like a June-bug to the light.
I’m drawn to You
Like a boxer to the fight.
I’m drawn to You
Like a sweet tooth and ice cream,
And it may all sound extreme,
But I’m drawn to You.
Maybe I’ll wake up…maybe soon
And find You take me home…Who can say?
‘Til then I’ll live it out…’til then I’ll follow through
And see how many more might feel the same way.
Chorus
Jesus, help me, won’t You take me to my heart’s desire?
Nothing could mean more than having You to be my fire!
Take me higher…draw me near.
Chorus…instrumental…repeat chorus to end
