Medical school requirements ignore what entire meant

Most western medicine doctors will probably talk about medical school requirements only if and when it’s complimentary to what they went through to get where they are. But once in a while, you can find an honest one.

Dr. Howard Luks shared this about medical school requirements:

“I’ve Been a Surgeon for 25 Years. Here’s What I Wish They Told Me in Medical School. Medical school taught me anatomy, physiology, and pathology. It taught me how to memorize, how to endure, and how to work longer hours than most people thought possible. But what it didn’t teach me was how to practice medicine with a full view of the human experience, mine included.

Here’s what I wish I had known from the start:

1. You’re not just treating anatomy. You’re treating a person.

The MRI is not the patient. And the labs aren’t the story. People bring fears, histories, habits, and hopes into every visit. So, learn to listen. Not just diagnose.

2. Health is more than disease management.

We were trained to treat disease, not to foster health. But so much of what patients need isn’t found in a prescription pad. It’s in their daily habits. And how they move, eat, sleep, and connect.

3. You can’t outrun burnout with productivity.

Medicine rewards stamina. But 80-hour weeks and constant pressure come at a cost. I learned the hard way that rest, boundaries, and life outside of medicine aren’t indulgences. In fact, they’re necessary for longevity in this field.

4. The best medicine is often “time,” not a scalpel.

When you’re trained to operate, everything looks like a surgical problem. But many of the best outcomes I’ve seen came from patience, movement, and education—not the OR.

5. The system is broken. You have to decide if you’ll break with it.

You’ll face pressures to treat charts, hit RVUs, and please insurers. But your real job is to be an advocate for your patients. And for your integrity. That may mean saying no to bad incentives.

6. Never stop learning. But know what’s worth learning.

You’ll never be done training. But the most valuable lessons won’t always come from journals. They’ll come from patients, from mistakes. And from stepping back far enough to see the bigger picture.

7. Who you are matters as much as what you know.

Clinical skill matters. But so does humility. So does presence. And so does being the kind of doctor your patient wants to talk to. Especially when they’re scared, in pain, or overwhelmed.

I’ve spent decades refining surgical technique. But the real mastery came from learning how to be a better human in the room. So, we need to teach that just as seriously as we teach how to suture.”

I certainly appreciate a doctor who will share something like that. Because it isn’t easy for someone who met all the medical school requirements, and makes plenty of money going the pharmaceutical route, to go against that grain. So when doctors do, it’s important for us to support them when we can.

Now, I can’t prove, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that a good attitude and joy actually help you stay healthy. But I bet you can’t prove they don’t either. And that’s why I say things like…

Wake up with joy in the morning And a wink and a smile.
Then show your love to your neighbor
As you walk every mile.
And show the light of the Spirit
Wherever you may go.
And when you wake in the morning,
Your joy will start to flow. © 2010

Tuesday thoughts determine the spots

About a dozen years ago, as I went through a streak of over 100 days of writing rhymes for kids, I had some Tuesday thoughts I figured they would enjoy.

And, coincidentally, Tuesday thoughts, sort of trended on social media today.

OK, the hashtag was actually #TuesdayVibe. But that’s just a minor detail. It’s all the same thing right? Tuesday thoughts. #TuesdayVibe. The point is it’s all about Tuesday. And that’s the theme of what I wrote in a rhyme back in 2013. It talked about how Tuesday thought he was all that AND the bag of chips. Matter of fact, he basically figured he was…

The First Day of The Week

Tuesday thought he was the first day of the week.
Others waved and smiled, but Tuesday would not speak.
He thought the sun rose just for him
‘Cause he was tall and sleek and slim.
He didn’t know it’s not about a day’s physique.

Tuesday thought the other days had moved away.
He called out and none of them would come to play.
But then the others came to chat.
They said, “Tuesday, you’re such a brat,
And here’s a couple more things we came here to say…

Monday really is the first day of the week,
But without you everything would look so bleak,
‘Cause seven is the right amount.
So, every one of us still count.
Now, Tuesday thinks that being second day is chic.

In the house of the Lord is no need of a sword

In the valley of the shadow of death, apparently you will find enemies and evil. But one place you will never find those things is in the house of the Lord. And that’s particularly exciting, at least if you trust Jesus, because that’s the house you’re gonna live in forever.

By the way, my educated guess is it’s not the kind of house you and I are used to.

Yeah, I bet just about all typical houses, even in the good parts of town, are locked at night. At least they are if the residents are sensible. Because evil people, in search of evil things to do, lurk in the dark. That’s just how they operate. And so it makes total sense to lock your doors at night.

But thank God, none of that will be necessary in His house. Forever.

Back when I was the praise and worship leader at a small church in the Denver metro area, I wrote a collection of praise and worship songs based on the pastor’s teaching from a series, he based on the book of Psalms. And one of those songs I wrote is based on what is probably the most famous song. Psalm 23. Here are the lyrics to…

In The House of the Lord

Father God,
You never leave me You never forsake me.
And Your Word…
Gives me courage to go where you take me.

You are with me through each dire upheaval.
With You in me I will fear no evil.
As I walk through the shadow of death…
I will sing till my very last breath…

Green pastures, still waters…
Goodness and mercy for your sons and daughters…
True love dwells in the House of the LORD.
Each person, each nation…
Can be renewed through Your sweet restoration…
True love dwells in the House of the LORD.

Father God,
You made a Way for my total redemption.
I believe…
Jesus died to provide that exemption.

He’s my shepherd through thorns and thru clover.
He’s my new wine, and my cup runs over.
As I walk through the shadow of death…
I will sing till my very last breath…

Iridescent lights caught in disappearing flights

“showing luminous colors that seem to change when seen from different angles” – That’s the definition of iridescent I just read in the dictionary app on my computer. It certainly describes the kind of iridescent lights I saw in a picture a friend of mine shared online.

You were probably a fun-loving, American kid once upon a time. Right? So, you probably enjoyed a time or three of chasing bubbles around the yard. And I’m talking about the big, colorful and sparkling bubbles that fly out of those hoops your mom or somebody would use to make the bubbles appear.

Are you with me?

Yeah, if you had an experience like that, you are a lucky ducky. Because you got to experience the exhilaration of pure delight from the simplicity of life.

I know our amazing digital devices can conjure up some dazzling images. But they absolutely cannot provide the multisensory experience of going outside, in the good old, summertime, and chasing bubbles. Devices will never provide or replace that kind of delight.

When my friend shared the picture (which you can see part of in the blue eyeglasses that go with this post) of bubbles in a meadow at sundown, memories flooded my mind.

So, I quickly jumped on my computer keyboard (no I didn’t write down my thoughts with a pencil) and captured a few of those memories in this short rhyme…

Iridescent Lights Disappearing In Flights

There were effervescent circles,
Shining iridescent lights,
On the svelte, magenta cosmos.
Almost no one saw the sights.
But then someone with a camera,
And creative appetites,
Captured just a hint of Heaven
In those iridescent lights.   © 2022 TF

Pride and self promotion don't have to cause commotion

Pride and self-promotion can lead to the  pursuit of likes, followers, or other forms of validation. And even Christians can start  to prioritize self-glorification over humility, the opposite of biblical teachings on servanthood and modesty.

So, avoid all social media and you’ll avoid pride and self promotion.

There’s your solution. I done did all the research for ya. No need to thank me. But you’re welcome.

Of course, you might be thinking,” Wait a minute. I have a solo business to run. And I don’t have a budget to hire an advertising agency or publicist or some other kind of company to promote my business. So I have to self promote.”

Yeah, you might be thinking that. And you might also think social media is a great tool to do that. And that’s correct.

But you wanna avoid pride and self-promotion problems. Right?

So, here’s what you do. Self promote as much as you need, want, or desire. Put your name and your information, products, and services out there for everyone to see. Use whatever social media tools you have at your disposal. And just don’t make it all about YOU. Don’t brag about YOU. Because that’s how pride sneaks in. And there’s no need for it.

Besides that, as the old marketing saying goes: “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” And if they get the impression that you care about YOU more than helping them, you’re dead in the water.

That being said, yourself promotion should still show that you’re confident you can do what needs to be done. And here’s what I recommend to help you keep a check on your pride versus your self promotion.

Read what the Bible says about pride.

And it has a lot to say about it. And it ain’t good. Especially in the Proverbs.

Then, once you get your head on right about it, you can securely sing, along with the words to this song:

I Can Do

Outside the lines the grass is greener.
But that will not change my demeanor.
Because my life runs like a river.
I’ll take what all my days deliver.

I know the morning sun will shine,
And so, I’ll draw another line.
I’ll keep a box of all my most important things
Inside my heart where they can be
A constant song of joy to me.
I love the sound of optimism when it sings.

I can do…what I need to. I know it’s so, so I can do!

Inside the lines the route is shorter.
Outside the box there’s no recorder.
Some days your view is from the summit.
Some nights your dreams might let you plummet.

But the morning sun will shine,
And so, I’ll draw another line.
I’ll keep a box of all my most important things
Inside my heart where they can be
A constant song of joy to me.
I love the sound of optimism when it sings.    © 2020

Envy is a sin you don't wanna be in

Proverbs 14:30 says it like this: “A sound heart is life to the body, But envy is rottenness (aka: a sin) to the bones.”

Yikes! Rottenness to the bones. Yeah, envy is a sin alright.

But even though they know that’s true, a lot of Christians have a lot of envy in their lives. And you see it all over social media. That’s where too many Christians compare their lives, ministries, or spiritual journeys to others. And that fosters envy or feelings of inadequacy. They see curated and idealized posts and feel like they don’t measure up.

And even though social media is only a faint shadow of real life, too many people put WAY too much emphasis and value on what is shared on those platforms. Especially when it comes to political issues. Take taxes, for example.

Just think how much more efficient and effective our country would be if taxes were used to keep the utilities infrastructure safe from pollutants and poisons. And if our tax dollars were used to keep bridges safe…and roads safe and smooth, and night lights shining, and a military with state-of-the-art equipment to defend us against all aggression. Personally I’d be OK if my taxes were for that. And it could all be done for approximately 5% of each person’s earnings. Amazing huh? But…

•A government who takes my money and gives it to corporate idiots who’ve run their businesses into the ground? No.

•A government who takes my money and gives it to bankers and insurance company owners who’ve squandered their assets? No.

•A government who takes my money and gives it to people who won’t work, or others who spend it on abortions, or others who spend it on athletic shoes, or flat screen TV’s, or satellite radio and mp3 players for their cars…No, No, No, and No.

Those things cause envy, bitterness, and resentment. And you can see it literally all over the world right now. So, that’s why I wrote…

God Over Government

Rights don’t come from government.
They only come from God.
Man’s words might acknowledge this,
But they can be outlawed.
No one here is sovereign.
And no one here is good.
And nations will disintegrate
Until that’s understood.
Truth will not prevail upon
The ones who choose to hate
The One who is the Truth, the Life,
The Way, and narrow Gate.
“Freedom isn’t free,” they say.
And you won’t disagree,
When you find out just what it took
To bring you liberty.
The man-made “constitution,”
Amended to add rights,
Barely reflects the message
From the one Father of lights.
He said perfect life awaits
For “who believes in Me.”
So, choose God over government.
His Truth shall make you free.
