Restful sleep in slumber deep helps a heap

Restful sleep is a combination of deep sleep and healthy breathing. Pretty simple, right? So why do so many people have such a hard time at night?

Why don’t YOU get plenty of restful sleep?

You can hear and watch a thousand different naturopaths, functional medicine practitioners, and standard western medicine doctors and you might get 1000 different answer answers to that question. Or at least a thousand different variations. But here’s the one thing they all have in common.

Not one of them knows why you don’t get plenty of restful sleep. Not one.

Oh sure, they can make educated guesses. And they might guess right. But they won’t know until after they make the guess, run some tests, and follow up with you. Because you are an individual. Yes, you were made in the image and likeness of God, just like every other human being, but you are uniquely YOU.

You might have a lot on your mind. Or you might have some sort of genetic predisposition to certain sleep patterns. And you could even be dealing with a health issue. There are lots of reasons why people don’t get as much sleep as they should. One night, about 11 years ago, I just had a mind filled with ideas and those ideas apparently affected my dreams. Then, one of the dreams woke me up. And I wrote a story about it. This one…

Kato cruised Clear Creek in his canoe.

His mind was filled with ideas and dreams. So, he didn’t look back. What was behind was gone. And he didn’t even want the memories. So he pointed his bow toward the horizon above the tall pines and rowed toward the future.

“Freedom is ahead,” he thought to himself. “With freedom I can try out my ideas and chase my dreams. And maybe even sleep well again.”

It was true, Kato hadn’t slept well in months. Even when he could remember the soft sounds of his mama’s voice reading his favorite stories or singing lullaby songs, he just couldn’t fall fast asleep. Because his eyes just wouldn’t close. There were too many dangers in his life.

Kato was much stronger than other ten year old boys. And he could work all day on a couple of bowls of potato soup and a cup of cold coffee. That was all the food he got each day from the slavers. But he stayed strong in his mind. And that helped him stay strong in his body. He knew one day he’d find a way out.

That day was this day.

The night guard had fallen asleep in his chair by the front door to the cabins. So, Kato slipped out the back window. He made his way through the dark forest to the creek. Because that’s where he had hidden his hand-carved canoe under deadwood logs. With the silence of a butterfly he had slipped the canoe, and its one small oar, into the creek. Then he made himself as flat and still as possible. And he let the currents of the creek sweep him away.

Safely out of anyone’s view, Kato sat up and paddled with all his might . And, as the sun rose above the treetops, so did the hope in his heart.

Sunbeams darted through the tree limbs like tiny elves. So, Kato decided to drift downstream in the shade. He leaned back on his elbows and took a deep, long breath of fresh morning air. Ah…the scents of the forest, the dampness of the dew, and the smoke from someone’s fire…way better than the sweaty cabins he’d suffered in for two years.

Then, like his canoe, Kato’s thoughts drifted.

Gently he floated further and further back to a better time. A time when he lived with his parents, his sister, and his brother in a much happier cabin. And he could almost smell a big, black pot of beans his mama cooked in the fireplace. Mm…mm…and some fried potatoes…and cornbread baked in bacon grease. Man, that was livin’. And he couldn’t wait to get back there.

Kato remembered his poppa reading out of a worn out hand-me-down Bible. One of his favorite verses was about hope. Hmm…how did that go? It was something like “I get up before sunrise and cry for help…I hope in your word, God”. He knew he didn’t remember it the same way poppa read it. But he was sure it went something like that.

Hope. Couldn’t ever let that die. Especially since Poppa said hope is always near because God is always near…near as your very next breath. Kato heard himself breathe. And that meant God must be very close. So freedom must be very close, too.

Then he heard dogs barking somewhere in the distance. Oh no. The slavers must be chasing him after all. So, Kato jumped up, grabbed his oar, and started paddling with all his strength. Luckily the current was faster in this part of the creek, so his canoe felt like a motorboat. In fact, he was suddenly aware of more rocks and more waves. Uh-oh…there were some rapids not too far ahead.

Imagine how you’d feel if you were in a little homemade canoe. And imagine crashing through rough water filled with big, jagged rocks. Kato wasn’t sure his little boat could take the beating of the waves. But he was sure it was certain doom if it hit any of those rocks.

Suddenly Kato couldn’t hear the dogs or smell the air or remember the past.

He could only hear the pounding of his heart. He could only smell the water splashing in his face. And he could only think about staying alive. So, he frantically slapped his oar in the water…first on the left side…then on the right. Then, he used the oar to keep from hitting a rock. Then, he smacked the oar back in the water. Again on the left. Then on the right. And back and forth and back and forth, and…pow!

Kato didn’t see the limb hanging low above the water. And it smacked him right in the shoulder and knocked him out of his canoe. The water splashed over him. And he swallowed a big mouthful. But he managed to somehow keep his head above water. He caught a quick glimpse of his canoe just as it slammed into a big rock in the middle of the creek. It broke into pieces and floated away downstream ahead of him.

The waves of rushing water were getting even bigger. The noise drowned out everything else.

And Kato’s arms began to feel like lead weights.

“Not…sure…how much longer…I can swim,” he thought. “I’ll never see you again mama and poppa. I’m sorry I wasn’t stronger.”

All at once, it felt like the whole world fell out from under him. Kato kept paddling his arms. But there didn’t seem to be any water to swim in. Without knowing, he had tumbled over a waterfall. It was only two or three seconds, but everything went into slow motion. Kato could see a deep pool of clear water below as he fell. And he hoped he wouldn’t hit a rock.

With a splash and a plunk, Kato hit the pool and sank deep into the sparkling, clear water. He opened his eyes and saw the image of his mama’s face floating in the millions of bubbles. And he reached for her and started to call her. But his mouth filled up with water. For some reason he wasn’t scared. In fact, he felt very calm. Then, he remembered another Bible verse his poppa read that said, “be still and know that I am God“.

Kato relaxed and fell into a deep, restful sleep.

All the bright and beautiful colors of the world danced before his eyes like carnival characters. He wasn’t thinking of where he’d been. And he wasn’t afraid of where he was going. He just knew somehow it was all going to be alright.

And the next time he opened his eyes, Kato was sure he was in Heaven. Before he could even see, he smelled cornbread. And it smelled just like mama’s. He opened his mouth to ask where he was, and a soft finger touched his lips. Then a face stooped over in front of him. He still couldn’t see very well. But it looked a little like a woman’s face. She must be an angel to welcome him into Heaven.

“Where am I?” Kato gurgled.

“Shh…lie still, Kato,” the voice answered. “You’re safe now. Your mama’s here. And you’re gonna be just fine.”

“Mama? Mom!” Kato blurted out. “Is it really you?”

“Yes, dear. You’re home. And we’re gonna make sure you stay.”

“But how did I get here?” Kato asked. “I thought I drowned.”

“No sweetie. Your poppa found you by the creek. And you nearly drowned, but he found you in time. See…we never gave up on finding you. And we knew if there was ever any way for you to make it home, it would be on Clear Creek. So your poppa was there almost every day watchin’ for you.”

It was a miracle…plain and simple.

Yep, it must have been a miracle. But whatever it was, Kato was thrilled to be home. And in that moment the still, small voice of God rose up in his mind saying…

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

And, as Kato heard those words in his heart, his mama hugged him close against her breast and sang…

Fall Fast Asleep

Yes, my love, I do adore you.
Hear my heart, it’s beating for you.
Private memories we will keep,
But for now, fall fast asleep.

Leave the world and cares behind you.
I’ll make sure they cannot find you.
You’ll be safe in slumber deep.
So for now, fall fast asleep.

Fall fast asleep. I’ll sing to you,
And I will keep you near.
Fall fast asleep, and when you wake,
You’ll find me waiting here.

No, my love, there’s nothing frightful.
Close your eyes it’s so delightful.
When you do, you’ll take the leap,
And you’ll see you’ll fall fast asleep.

Before sunrise with crystals in his eyes

It was a clear cool morning about three years ago. Or wait. Maybe it was three years from now. I suppose it doesn’t matter. The point is, little Ivanto woke up, before sunrise, and saw beautiful colors swirling around his room in glass bubbles. There were thousands of these little orbs, and every few seconds one would smash into the wall and burst. And tiny shards of light would fade away into the air, like fog in sunlight.

Little Ivanto rubbed his eyes and looked again. But the swirling orbs didn’t disappear. In fact, there were more than ever. And many more of them crashed into the wall with a flash of light, and then they faded away.

“What’s all this?” he wondered. “Am I still asleep?? Am I dreaming? Yeah, that’s gotta be it.”

But just then a voice in the center of the swirling colors whispered…

“Do you want to see more?”

Little Ivanto pulled the covers up to the bottom of his nose. But he couldn’t…no, he didn’t dare look away.

“Uh…yes…yes, I do.”

“Well then…hold out your right hand,” the voice commanded. And Ivanto did as he was told.

One of the swirling orbs almost instantly flew over the bed. And it hovered and rotated just above Ivanto’s little outstretched hand.

“Look closely,” the voice whispered.

Ivanto pulled his hand toward his face, and the orb followed. He looked deeply into the clear crystal circle and saw a tiny boy running. He squinted his eyes, and he could see the boy was chasing something. What was it? He couldn’t quite make it out. It was pretty and had a nice form, but he just couldn’t tell what it was.

“Look deeper,” the voice whispered a bit louder.

And as he did, Ivanto could see the boy was him. And whatever it was he was chasing started to come into focus and take form. With each second it that more beautiful. Little Ivanto could feel a sense of joy wash over him. It was all beginning to make sense. And joy filled his heart. As it did, the tiny version of him dived forward and wrapped both arms around the beautiful bubble.

And it burst into a thousands of light crystals that floated into Ivanto’s eyes. And he fell back asleep.

When he woke up before sunrise the next morning, he remembered.

And he shimmied out of bed, found his note paper, and scribbled down five words. And he kept that piece of paper with him for the rest of his life.

Those five words changed his life forever. And they were…

Peachtree Road Race and my game face

I remember way, way back in the 1980’s, I lived in the Atlanta, Georgia area. And, just in case you didn’t know this, they have a famous 10k run every year. It’s called the Peachtree Road Race. And it goes through sections of Atlanta that include some fairly large hills. Yeah, it’s a challenge. But I decided to take it on.

So, I bought my expensive, fancy schmancy Peachtree Road Race running gear.

Oh wait. No, I didn’t.  I just:

  • put on my basic blue sweatshirt and sweat pants
  • pulled a pair of running shorts over them
  • slipped on my basic sneakers, and
  • took off from my apartment to go run the neighborhood.

I started my training in January because the 10k run would be around the 4th of July. And I knew I’d need months to prepare. So, like I said, I left my apartment for the first run.

There was a small school nearby, with a running track. And I figured going around in circles for a while would be a better start than trying to tackle the hills right away. So, I headed over there. And the track was covered with about three inches of snow, the kind that gets a slightly crunchy shell on top. But I started running in crunchy circles. And after about three laps, I had a smoother surface.

After about two weeks of running on the track, I decided I needed a change of scenery.

So, I took off for a run through the extended neighborhood. And it was going well enough until I turned one corner and faced “the monster.”

“The Monster” was a steep neighborhood close to the beginning of my run. In other words, before I even got warmed up there it was. And the first time up it was slow. Like S. L. O. W. slow. But I struggled through and made it to the top. Then, a large section of the run was either level or somewhat downhill.

And I gotta say I didn’t like that setup.

At first. Increased.

But after days, then weeks, of tackling that hill I noticed something mighty cool. I wasn’t struggling to barely make it up the monster. In fact, I conquered the monster with a bounce in my steps. Take that, monster!

Then, I noticed something else. Without much of a conscious decision I started running further (or was it farther?) And each week I increased my mileage. Because that 10k (aka 6.213712 miles) was the goal. I didn’t want to just “make it through” the Peachtree Road Race. I wanted to run it, finish with a smile, get my accomplishment t-shirt, and have plenty of fuel left for anything else I wanted to do that day.

So, I trained. And I ran every day. Through rain or snow (which was only a couple of times in Atlanta) or heat and humidity. And I added the miles until it was no big deal to run 6 miles. Or even more.

And I got to that point some people call the “runner’s high” or the “second wind.” That was awesome. I could run till I got my second wind. And then it felt like I could run for however long I wanted. And it felt grrrreat!

And I owed it all to “The Monster.”

Because the tough stuff made me tough enough to reach and surpass my goals.

So, I think that’s a little example of why Paul told the Philippians (and you and me) to keep pressing on toward the goal for the prize. But he wasn’t talking about some silly t-shirt at the end of the Peachtree Road Race.  He said the prize is the “upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” And that ain’t 10k. That’s solid gold.

Reach out through the tough stuff.
Press on through the pouring rain.
And you’ll find enough stuff
To turn your loss into gain.

Stay tuned,

Key to happiness pitch that comes without a hitch

I’ve got a key to happiness pitch that comes out a hitch. And I’m always amazed by how many people pass up the opportunity without as much as a second glance.

Maybe that’s because I call it a key to happiness pitch.

So maybe the flood of advertising and marketing you have to go through every single day makes you leery of hearing some knucklehead’s key to happiness pitch. I guess I can understand that.

But let’s say that’s not exactly it. And instead, let’s say your scenario sounds something like my following description (and subtle pitch).

Maybe where you are right now is a place full of anger, bitterness, and turmoil. There’s a way to be happy instead. Or maybe your life is going great, but you think something is missing. And you can’t quite put your finger on what would make that go away.

Well, there IS a way to clear that up.

If physical prowess is the key to happiness, then pro athletes should be some of the happiest people in the world. But I read alarming reports of drug abuse, dysfunctional and abusive relationships, murder, and suicide in most sports.

And if money is the key to happiness, why do some of the unhappiest stories come from celebrities with millions of dollars in their accounts?

Then, of course, there’s work and vacations. Many successful people say work keeps them happy. Others say they get regular recuperative rest in their vacation destination.

While there’s nothing inherently wrong with those solutions. But they don’t last. Otherwise, you’d be able to determine an end game. In other words, you’d know when enough was enough.

So, how can you know how to be happy?

The Apostle Paul, in Philippians 4:10-23 talked about how to “be abased” and “to abound.” and he explained how to “both be full and to be hungry” and how to “abound and to suffer need.” In those verses he explained how to be happy where you are right now.

When I read that passage, I get a sense that Paul enthusiastically rejoiced for and with the Philippians. He acknowledged their care for him and how it uplifted him to the point of rejoicing. Obviously, Paul knew the key to happiness, lasting and real happiness. And I know what that is, too. In fact, the key is what inspired me to write….

Swallowed Up By Life

I’ll be swallowed up by life
That will never fade away
When I leave my body here
On an ordinary day.
I won’t mourn the things I lose
‘Cause there’s so much more to gain
And my spirit will rejoice
When I leave this earthly plane.
I’ll be swallowed up by life
And I’ll never more know death.
I will just begin to breathe
When I breathe my final breath.  © 2014 TF

P.S. If you truly want to know how to be happy where you are right now, look up and kneel down.

Just a poet with soul seeking God's loving control

Alright. I know you love me. And I know it’s not because I’m just a poet with soul. Even though I write to delight and ignite. But here’s the thing.

You don’t love me the way God does.

Now I don’t think, for even a nanosecond, that knowing that truth makes me appreciate your love, even one millimeter less. It’s just that your love, compared to the power of God’s love, is tiny. Still shiny. But tiny. Just like my love for you is.

Yeah, I can put my heart and soul into loving my neighbor (you). But the distractions of this world can alter or blur or otherwise deter my focus. God doesn’t have those kinds of issues or problems. And that’s despite the fact that He also listens to and answers prayers 24 hours a day.

Yikes!

If I have to answer two phone calls in a day, my brain has to be hung out to dry.

God created you and me. And He made us alive again even after we rebelled against and/or disobeyed Him. Yeah, you could say we were kinda like children of wrath. But you wouldn’t have to say it. Because the apostle Paul already did.

It sounds crazy. But you and I have given in to the ruler of this world, who isn’t currently God by the way, and yet He still loves us enough to make a way for us to live forever with him.

And that’s just a tiny, tiny fraction of why I put so much emphasis on the power of God’s love. Because it’s powerful enough to overcome and de-throne the prince of the power of the air. So, because of that love, I’m more than…

Just a poet with soul

I’m just a poet
whose iambic pentameter
Drives words that live
inside the Christian parameter.
But maybe time will show that
these rhymes and these reasons
Helped some kids live with joy
through some difficult seasons. © 2024

Island Day Spa where I say rah rah

It’s not exactly an island like you might have pictured in your mind. Especially since it isn’t way out in the South Pacific or some place exotic like that. So, it’s not really an island day spa. But I’m gonna take some poetic license and stick with my assertion.

Because it sure feels like an island day spa.

Yeah, you’ve got the beautiful blue and green clear ocean waters. And there’s sugary white sand. Plus there are lots of seagulls, pelicans, and other seaside birds making their presence known. And on the right days, it can all add up to a very therapeutic look and feel.

And Elgielene and I will be calling that part of the country home. Again.

She did a lot of her growing up there. It’s the area where we met all those years ago. And we have quite a few extended family members there. I won’t go into why that’s a big factor, right now. But just know we’re both looking forward to it. And we believe it will be a very beneficial move. And the move is only a few weeks away now.

Where, you ask? The Emerald Coast of Pensacola, Florida.

So, that’s why I’m in sort of an island spa mood right now. And that reminds me of a song I wrote for kids of all ages to enjoy. Here are the lyrics to….

Island Day

Over in the mango tree
Toucan looking straight at me
Starfish in the ocean waves
Dolphin, laughin’, misbehaves

Oh, oh, oh, it’s an island day
And Oh, oh, oh sail your cares away
Oh, oh, oh, cross the seven seas
Oh, oh, oh, on a clear cool Breeze

Parrot is a private eye
Big Blue whale don’t tell no lie
Swordfish out there watching you
Wonders what you’re gonna do

Chorus

If you want to roam,
A little while away from home,
Let’s catch the rising sun
Never will the fun be done…

King crab with his mighty claw
Claims that he’s from Antigua
And he says, “Hey, if you please,
Set a course-up to The Keys?”     © 2008 TF
