At my desk and feeling Shakespeare-esque

So, I’m sitting at my desk. And I found this in-depth review of my website. Part of it said:

Tony Funderburk’s website paints a picture of a man who is:

  • Boldly Convicted: Unapologetic about his Christian beliefs, he uses his platform to proclaim his faith and values.
  • Creatively Versatile: As a writer, musician, and illustrator, he blends media to craft a unique, engaging experience.
  • Emotionally Authentic: His heartfelt content reflects a genuine desire to connect with his audience.

In short, https://www.TonyFunderburk.com is a cozy, faith-filled corner of the web. And a space where Tony, the “#1 Righteous Rhymester,” shares his preacher-poet perspective through rhythm, rhyme, and relatable stories. Made for those who enjoy God-centric content with a playful twist.

Yeah, that defines why I’m at my desk alright.

Because I care about YOU. And I care about what’s gonna happen to you. Not just today. Every day. And that includes all the days that flow into an endless future. Because you DO have an endless future. And eternal life and death are yours for the choosing. So, I suggest this:

Choose Life

Well you hid your heart in a so-called safe place,
And you locked your love in a big, black box,
And you had no hope,
But you built your brave face,
And you ran your rat race…through the tics and tocs.

Well, the bluebells bloomed in ideal intentions
As you tilled the truth into lifelong lies,
And you dug in deep making many mentions
Of your pretty pensions…always alibis.

You can’t run away from real truth.
And every word of truth is a knife.
A captivating voice might pigeonhole your choice,
Cut free…and choose life.

When your daydreams die and you feel half-hearted,
And your love is lost in a soulless sky,
Try to train your thoughts when your brain’s bombarded
By the stuff you started, learn to love the lie.

Choose life…choose life…choose life  © 2013

Invisible thoughts you can see and you got them from me

It all started with a dream. An idea. Just some invisible thoughts in my head. Then, I wrote the thoughts down and they became words that I put into this little white box where you could see them. And that’s when the magic happened

I took invisible thoughts out of my head and put them into yours.

And you didn’t feel a thing. It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t weird at all. Right?

But, then, even more magic happened. Your thoughts turned into pictures in your mind. You could see those pictures just by thinking about the words. And all that, my fumble-fingered friend, is how dreams are made.

So…no matter what you plan to do with your life…

No matter where you plan to go…

No matter how you plan to start and finish, remember to use the dreams in the invisible thoughts in your mind to thank God. Because He’s the one who makes sure that…

Dreamers Dream

Dream a little dream a lot
And dream away your frown.
Dream up stardust Christmas lights
To sparkle every town.
Dream at night and in the day
And never let dreams end…
Because they come from Jesus,
A dreamer’s truest friend. © 2014

And one more thing. Be sure your dreams don’t steal from others. There are lots of people who would like to come into your home and steal your dreams instead of working on their own.

And there are other people who wanna say…

“But it’s dreamers we’re talkin’ about.
We can’t just simply kick them out.”

And to that I say:

‘Les they sneaked in and then hid.
Huh, you say that’s what they did?
Why can’t they dream in their own land?
Why is it hard to understand?
When what’s not yours enters your scheme,
You steal from someone else’s dream.

So, YES, be the YOU that God made you to be and use your own invisible thoughts to dream and make great things happen. But don’t steal from others to make it happen. Deal? Deal!

Happy about it much more than without it

There I was, in my grandparents’ living room. It was a hot, Oklahoma summer day. And my Dad and Uncle were putting a weird-looking box through a window. I didn’t know what it was, at the time, because I was only about five years old. But my grandmother sure looked happy about it. I could tell she thought that box was a good thing.

Turns out she was happy about it because it was cool.

No. I mean actually cool. Not just cool like something you like is cool. The big box in the window pushed cool air into the house once they got it hooked up. What I didn’t know then was that my Dad and Uncle installed an evaporative cooler. Also known as a swamp cooler. And, wow, it made a big difference in how it felt in that living room.

By the way, that was a bunch of decades ago. Yeah, believe it or not, summers were mighty hot way back then. I’m not kiddin’. Oklahoma summer days could easily reach 100 degrees on a regular. Basis. Hmm…kinda like now.

Yeah, as it turns out, the Earth’s climate has been changing for just about as long as anybody has ever kept a record of it. And they’ve kept records for thousands of years.

You might not believe me, when I tell you this. But for most of my long life we called all that so-called “climate change” seasons. Seasons changed every year. And everybody was happy about it. Because every season has its own magic. Nothing to fear. It ain’t gonna kill you.

But you don’t have to take my word for it.

Here’s what your Creator says about our planet.

While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
Cold and heat,
Winter and summer,
And day and night
Shall not cease.

And here’s something I wrote about this climate change thing

God is great, and God is strong.
And He made all there is.
So don’t fear this fearful world.
Remember, champ, you’re His.
If He says a thing is so,
Then you can bet it’s true.
Trust His promise to us all.
And trust Him to come through. © 2015

I read a blurb that said kids still like to do things kids have done for decades. Like turn a spoon into a spaceship. Or turn a cardboard box into a castle. But now kids do funny things online because…well, because they can.

What I read said, “toddlers try to vlog with their parents’ phones. They narrate their snack time like mini influencers.” Where do they come up with those notions (rhetorical question because obviously adults nudge them)?

I also read that kids do other funny things like:

  • those wild TikTok dance challenges with zero coordination and maximum enthusiasm
  • invent games like “floor is lava”
  • pretend the couch is a pirate ship and the dog’s the captain
  • Ask Alexa or Siri stuff like “Why don’t dinosaurs wear socks?”

But, in that list, I noticed something missing. And it confirms what you can easily notice when you take a walk through just about any neighborhood in America. Kids don’t tend to do sunny things.

Yeah. They don’t play outside like kids used to.

But that’s no big deal. Right? Well, it’s no big deal if unhealthy kids is no big deal. And unhealthy kids is what you get when they do all, or at least most, of their funny things indoors. Because the only vitamin D you’ll find indoors will be in a bottle. And it doesn’t even remotely compare to the absolutely free vitamin D they can get playing outdoors.

I’m not gonna go through a whole list of why vitamin D is important. Just know that it’s a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as a mineral-controlling hormone in the body. And it helps maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. Plus, a decent amount of it helps prevent nutritional rickets and osteomalacia (soft bones) in kids.

So, if you get a kick out of the funny things kids do, encourage them to do more of it outside in the sunshine. And you don’t have to make it a command. Just tell ’em to outside and start…

Being Silly

You could shine just like a diamond in sunlight.
You could be a star and light the whole dark midnight.
And you could be a daffodil or tiger lily,
But nothin’ quite compares to being silly.

You could make a frown and wrinkle up your whole face
You could walk into a room and freeze the whole place.
By why would you want to make someone so chilly,
When nothin’ quite compares to being silly?

You could be a superhero on a mission
Or a genie helpin’ people with their wishin’.
You could make a funny face at Uncle Willy.
Yeah, nothin’ quite compares to being silly.

The sad part is the broken heart is just the start

This morning I remembered a mad conversation, between a young couple, I overheard in a burger joint a few years ago. And they were parents of a couple of young kids. I know that because the kids were in the booth with them. So, the sad part is how the kids had to listen.

And that’s the sad part because of what those kids were learning.

I hoped and wished one of them would actually stop and think about the words gushing out their mouths. And I wished they could see the looks on their kids’ faces. AND those little faces reminded me of my younger brother and me. We went through a bunch of that, too. Mom and Dad exchanging loud insults and accusations. Dad slamming doors. Mom crying.

Then, after the yelling and crying phase, my brother and I endured most of 10 years of train rides from Texas to Kansas and back every year. At the end of a school year, our Dad and stepmom put us on a train, in Houston, that took us to Kansas City. And we lived in Kansas for the summer. Then, toward the end of summer, our Mom put us on the train back to Houston.

(funny side story: Mom had two more kids. And when they got old enough to talk, they thought the Kansas City train station was Texas. Because that’s where Mom dropped us off. And she told them she had to send us back to Texas. Ah, good times.)

Anyway…

Let’s get back to the young couple.

Their argument lasted for the entire 20 minutes or so, I was there. At least they kept the volume to a level where they didn’t stir up the whole restaurant. I could just see that turning into a viral video from the perspective of dozens of phones in the joint. I’ve witnessed way too many of those scenes in recent years. Bet you have, too.

The sad part about most of those arguments is how they just continue day after day. But once in a great while, men and women actually work things out and end up with a stronger love. And it’s almost always because of one thing.

They set aside their selfishness. And they decide to follow what God says about love. When they do that, it turns out right. It’s not the easiest thing to do. I know too well. But it’s always the right thing to do.

If you find yourself in that position, not where you’d like to be with your loved one, stop trying to win. Just let God in and let love win. Especially if you have kids who see and hear you. And if you do, share this little rhyme with them to plant some love in them, too.

The Last Word

Keep a bolt of lightning in your brain
And a jar of honey in your heart.
Let love be the last word from your lips
Whether you’re together or apart.

Lightning is your passion over pain.
Honey is your holy hope within.
Send those feelings through your fingertips
And remember, always let love win.   © 2020

Rainbow high up in the sky and the reason why

“They” used to say, “Man, I’m on such a high right now,” when something made you big-time happy. And some said that when they inhaled certain kinds of smoke. But let’s not go there. The reason I brought it up is to talk about a rainbow high.

And the rainbow high comes from an actual rainbow.

Not just some bright colors in an arch, or on a flag, or painted across a unicorn. No, I’m talkin’ about the beautiful colors you see after it rains and the sun shines on the water high in the sky. Yeah, a real, refracted light rainbow.

I remember, back in the 80’s, when I enjoyed seeing rainbows almost every afternoon from the patio of my apartment in Lakewood, Colorado. There were so many that I wrote a political song called “Rainbow City.”

Anyway…

There’s a large group of people who’ve done their unbalanced best to steal the meaning of the rainbow. They’ve tried to adopt it to their lifestyle choices, which contradict what God says.

Speaking of God, He invented light and colors, in case you didn’t know, but I’m sure you do. And He’s the one who said it’s a sign of His pledge with every creature on the Earth.

That’s why I wrote this short story and poem a few years ago.

Rainbow riders are very special people. In the first place, they wear special boots that help them jump real high into the sky. Then they can jump on a brand new rainbow and ride it all the way around the world. And rainbow riders love to eat colorful fruits and berries. They fill their plates with cantaloupe, watermelon, strawberries, blueberries, honeydew, and pineapple. They know if they eat plenty of fruit they’ll be able to jump higher and ride away into the sunset.

Now, if you just sit back and close your eyes and look real hard, you might just see some of those rainbow riders riding rainbows behind your eyelids.

Now, THAT’S what I call a rainbow high.

And if you really focus, you might be able to jump up and join the…

Rainbow Riders

Riding on a rainbow after all the raindrops fell…
Little rainbow riders didn’t hear the dinner bell…
So they kept on riding through the sky above the clouds…
High above the weather and away from all the crowds.

They could see the sailing ships and fishes in the sea…
They could see the pyramids and lands of mystery…
All the world was like a book with video and sound…
And they could turn the pages just by going ’round and ’round.

Little rainbow riders ride the rainbows till they fade…
Then they land on earth and have a picnic in the shade…
They fill their bowls with berries and juicy melons too…
And fall asleep and dream of riding rainbows through the blue.  © 2013

This world is getting darker and meaner every day. And there are fewer kids doing wholesome kid stuff with each passing year. But I think you’ll find that the sights and scents of a flower garden can still attract kids almost as much as they attract bees.

So, stop what you’re doing and make the most of it. So what if you had an appointment. Be a little late. So what if you’re on the way to work or the kids are on the way to school (which I recommend is in your own home). What you can teach them in a single, precious moment can have eternal benefits. And that trumps the daily routine any time.

With each passing year you have fewer chances to make a difference.

Here’s the main reason you and the kids should stop and smell the flowers. Because it’s a simple, effective connection you and they can make to your living, loving God who made the flowers. He’s the Creator who spoke words and all the universe exploded into existence. That’s powerful stuff packed into each flower. And right down to the very fragrance that wafts up into your nose. I call it…

The Scent of Heaven

Take a look at the colors in a flower.
They’re as beautiful as anything you’ll see.
And God knows just exactly what they all need
To bring joy and delight to you and me.

Even more than the best and brightest flower
God loves you every moment of the day.
So the next time you stop and smell a lily
Take a minute just to thank the Lord and say…

“Lord I love to smell the lilies of the valley
And the roses, lavender, and lilacs too.
I love to know they come back every springtime.
Best of all I know the flowers came from You.”  © 2015

Honey bee and me, we get along, you see

I never met a honey bee I didn’t like. And, maybe it’s just my imagination (because I have a powerful imagination), but I think they like me, too.

Because every honey bee I see smiles at me.

Now, I gotta tell ya. It takes a special way of squinting your eyes in order to be able to see a honey bee smile. But I’ve been working on my squint since I was a very young boy. And, at the risk of sounding braggy, I’m probably the best honey bee smile-finding squinter in the world.

Maybe that’s because I’ve always enjoyed honey. On, and in, all kinds of good stuff. I put honey on walnuts and blueberries and heavy cream. I put it in my coffee with butter and coconut oil. And, back when I still ate peanut butter, I added honey to my sandwich instead of jelly. Mm, mm, more gooder.

And I enjoyed the amber goodness before I ever found out how the honey you find close to where you live is a natural antibiotic. Isn’t that cool? It’s also a tasty way to help you fight off germs inside your body. Bet you can’t find any jellies that can do that for you.

So, you see, those little bees are watching out for you. They just think they’re gathering nectar for their hives. And maybe that’s why they buzz by me with tiny smiles on their bee faces. Hmm, maybe they understand how they were designed to help us humans have a better, longer life. I can’t prove that’s true. But it wouldn’t surprise me if it is.

OK, Spring is almost here. And that means you’ll start seeing honey bees gathering nectar from flowers. So, if you see one of ‘em buzzing around you, don’t be scared. Just work on your bee smile-finding squint. And when you get good at it, give the fuzzy little bee a wink. Then, go in the house and ask your mom for some…

Peanut Butter And Honey

Peanut butter and honey
Sittin’ on a slice of bread.
Peanut butter said “Honey…
You and me should wed.
We should be together
And nevermore be apart.
Honey, I really mean it,
And this comes from my heart.”
Honey said “Peanut butter,
We don’t need to get wed.
I’m just a natural sweetener.
You’re just a sandwich spread.
Let’s just stick together
Through every crunch and munch.
They’ll have us back on Tuesday.
The kids love us for lunch.  © 2013

X marks the spot where I got this thought

Play

Get The The Power of God's Love Podcast Delivered to Your Device Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | Android | Pandora | iHeartRadio | Podchaser | Podcast Index | TuneIn | Deezer | RSS | More

X marks the spot where I read what a homeschool mom said about the idea that homeschooled kids don’t get enough social interaction. She said:

Homeschooled kids:

  • leave their homes,
  • talk to people,
  • read books,
  • play sports,
  • go to dances,
  • play instruments,
  • debate,
  • create art,
  • work jobs,
  • drive cars,
  • build things,
  • perform science experiments, and
  • grow up to live in the real world.

And then she finished with this tongue-in-cheek remark:

“It’s almost as if they don’t need the public school system at all.”

And I said X marks the spot because I read all that on X.com

In case you don’t know about that social channel (and it almost seems impossible that you wouldn’t) it used to be Twitter. But Elon Musk bought it. And he likes all his businesses to have some sort of connection to the letter X. Whatever.

Anyway…

Just imagine. A kid stays home to learn the three R’s from mom and dad, but he can still talk to other people. Wow, that’s explosive news. But that ain’t all. Learning at home also doesn’t stop kids from reading books or drawing and painting. And that woman expects us to believe those same kids can also learn to play musical instruments and even debate?!

Plus, those socially deprived kids drive cars, build things, and grow up in and go out into the real world.

I can ONLY imagine how difficult it must be for them to order off a burger joint’s menu. Because that’s gonna require skills they surely missed out on in those dastardly home schools.

Yeesh.

Look. If you’re a kid, and your mom and/or your dad are your teachers, you’re one of the luckiest kids in the whole, wide world. Because you get to learn from people who actually LOVE you and want you live up to the potential God put in you.

And speaking of Him, here’s what I recommend…

Start learning about the one, living Lord.
Put knowledge inside your head,
And when you read something He has to say,
Go back and read what you read.
As you get older you’ll see what I mean…
Go add and subtract and spell.
Then learn all about the one, living Lord.
He made you and loves you well.

Plus, He died on a “cross.” And that X marks the spot where Grace was paid for, forever.

Wind speed and the need to plant a seed

Where I live it can get pretty windy. In fact, the current Funderburk home town is the fifth windiest city in America. We have an average wind speed of 11.5 mph. And the strongest recorded wind speed is over 101 mph. Wow, that’s a lotta gusto.

All that windy talk reminds me of when my dad showed my brother and me how to hook up our kites to our saltwater rods and reels. And it was SO cool how we could get the kites into the air with no help needed from someone else. We just lifted the rod and let the wind catch the kite wings and let out the line.

And, in almost no time at all, our kites would be soaring a 100 yards in the air. Then, the coolest part was how easy it was to get ’em back down. Just reel ’em in.

Brilliant!

So, tomorrow never comes.

Huh? What’s that got to do with kites and wind speed?

Hang in there, you restless wrangler. I’m gittin’ to that.

Yeah, tomorrow never comes. But there’s always tomorrow. That’s the peculiar puzzle known as time. And it’s why I say…

  • Ride the wind when it’s windy.
  • Drink up when it rains, and
  • Sunbathe when others complain about the heat.

Because your days here on earth are very, very short. Don’t take yourself so seriously. Be like excited kids with kites on rods and reels.

Kids know how to laugh at things no one else can even see. Kids know how to be goofy and not care that mud got on the knees of their pants. And kids know how to love uncontrollably, hug unabashedly, and give undeniably. And most of all…kids know how to…

Ride The Wind

Monday morning put your wings on tight.
Wouldn’t wanna lose ’em in the middle of a flight.
Don’t forget wings for your one best friend…
Need a navigator, when you’re gonna ride the wind.

Check the weather. Is the blue sky blue?
Just a little lightning is enough to throttle you.
Wear your goggles, and I recommend
You take along some gloves when you’re gonna ride the wind.

Nothing better than to fly up high
Soaring with the eagles, it’s like dancing in the sky.
Don’t you worry when it has to end…
There’s always tomorrow when you’re gonna ride the wind.  © 2013

Stay at home mom was da benefits bomb

When I was a boy, most parents, across America, actually cared about their kids’ health. And well-being. Yeah, I know it sounds like a fairy tale. But it was true. Most homes had a stay at home mom. And that’s a HUGE advantage over what goes on in America these days.

My stay at home mom was better than any superhero.

She didn’t just make sure I was fed. She also bought, prepared, and cooked the food. Show me some guy who dresses up in spandex with a spider or large S on his chest who ever did that. Sorry, you won’t be able to show me that. Because it never happened.

Plus, my stay at home mom didn’t just make sure I was dressed properly. She also bought or made my clothes. And she washed and ironed those clothes. And she did that for multiple kids in the house. GASP! That’s gotta be a typo. Because that doesn’t even sound real.

But it was total reality back in the day.

I pity the vast majority of households in America who don’t have a stay at home mom. It’s tragically sad to know the enormous benefits they’re missing out on.

Moms AND dads, back then, for the most part made sure their kids watched G-rated programs and movies. Thankfully they had lots to choose from that had positive messages. Even if they were just messages of friendship, honesty, perseverance, and teamwork.

And positive faith-filled messages (without technology overload) sparked imagination and creativity.

Yeah, it ain’t no coincidence that clear minds create better.

An increasing number of people want you to believe there’s no such thing as a coincidence. Of course, that’s not true. Most times things happen because of your choices. But sometimes the way things are is by design. And one example is how much better your mind works when it’s filled with better things.

I’m so glad my stay at home mom AND my work hard dad gave me a life of lots more better things. Because that sparked my imagination and creativity. And that spark grew into a flame that’s never burnt out.

The color of music notes is in your head,
In circles and parallelograms,
And in abstract and translucent bowls.
And it’s all held together by sonic thread.

The colors keep dripping down into the song
Like jellies and marmalades and jams.
And they take on sweet lives without souls.
And that’s where you’ll find yourself floating along.

Funny looks because of rhyming books

According to research, rhyming books can “help with language development, including phonemic awareness, which is crucial for early reading skills.” And apparently rhyming books “make learning fun which is particularly appealing to young children.” Hmm. I guess that might all be true. But I just write ’em for the funny looks.

Yeah, kids get funny looks on their faces with the right rhymes.

And call me goofy (I’ve been called worse), but I just get a kick out of those funny looks. Puzzled looks. Faces that show obvious consternation (love that word). Because it shows me they hear what I wrote, and maybe even enjoy it, even if they don’t quite understand.

When I was the music “minister” for a small Denver church, for 3 years, I almost always had a crowd of kids visit me on the stage after church was over. They called me Mister Tony (which is why I use that name for my animated alter ego). And I had always enjoyed messing with their minds by calling them by wrong names. Or by turning their statements upside down or inside out.

Like, I’d ask them if they were gonna go outside and enjoy the beautiful green skies that day. And they’d get funny looks on their faces. “Not green skies. Blue,” they’d say. And I’d give them a certain look and act like I was amazed they thought such silly things.

My wife and I didn’t receive the blessing of our own kids. But I always learned a lot about what kids like by watching nieces and nephews and my friends’ kids. And those kids in church.

For over 20 years I’ve put my rhyming skills to work in Christian books and music for kids. Because rhymes can help make Christian values, Bible stories, and even moral lessons easy and fun for kids to remember.

Then there’s the entertainment value.

Rhymes, in a song, appeal to kids because, I believe, they can almost “know” what’s coming. And the anticipation of it tickles their fancy. And I believe that’s true because that happened for me when I was a kid. That might have been a big part of why I wanted to dive into music even when I was very young.

Another part of the entertainment value comes when you perform music and aim it at kids. Especially when you use your own funny looks or movements to see if they’re paying attention. I remember singing for kids, parents, and teachers at a Christian school’s spring festival. And I got a kick out of how some little girls laughed at the words to my song, “Don’t.” I was impressed at how well they got the gist of it.

An article I recently read said “books that combine faith-based content with rhyming can serve as a tool for passing down religious traditions and teachings in an accessible format for young minds.” And it added that “some popular examples might include:

  • Bibles for children that use rhyme to simplify and explain scriptures.
  • Books on Christian morals like sharing, kindness, or the story of Jesus, told through rhymes.
  • Prayer books for kids where prayers are written in poetic form.”

I’m fine with all that. And I’ll actually keep working on providing those kinds of resources. But, between you and me…my favorite part is still the funny looks.

Be aware, everywhere, who is and ain't there

Be aware. Be very aware. At all times. And in all places. Especially if you’re a female, a child, or a weakened old person. Because you best believe there are scumbags out there who are aware of who’s not aware.

So, once again. Be what? Yeah! Be aware.

Years ago I wrote a short story about a young boy who wasn’t the least bit aware. And the story shows what he had to go through as a result. Of course, this is the kind of story that leads to lots of child trafficking and missing persons in general. I hope this never happens to you.

It was a very hot summer day. But Curtis didn’t mind. He was standing in front of the ice cream freezer at the grocery store. Holding the door open he felt the fresh, cold air blow through his short, blond hair. He remembered his mom telling him to stay close, so he slammed the freezer door and turned around.

“Mommy, this feels good,” he chirped. But Mommy wasn’t there. He froze like a vanilla popsicle. “Where’s my mommy?” he thought. Oh no!

Suddenly Curtis ran to one end of the aisle. He looked left. He looked right. No Mommy. He saw those big, gray boxes where grownups slide stuff and put their money in. No Mommy. He ran to the front door of the store and looked outside. No Mommy. He ran all the way down the aisle with the yellow bags of potato chips he loved. He didn’t even see them. And when he got to the other end…no Mommy.

He remembered Mommy saying, “Stay close, Curtis.”

He sure wished she was close right now. But she was still nowhere in sight. Then he saw a woman by the big, green watermelons with a red shirt on. Mommy was wearing a red shirt. He flew across the floor as fast as his short legs could go. As he got to her he yelled, “Mommy!” But it wasn’t her.

“Are you lost, little boy?” asked the lady in the red shirt. Curtis just shook his head and took off again. This time he ran past the shelves with that purple cough medicine he hated. He didn’t even care. Mommy wasn’t there. A man behind a glass window pointed his finger and said something. But Curtis didn’t stop. He just knew Mommy had to be here somewhere.

And he kept remembering her say, “Stay close, Curtis.”

He ran past the sweet smelling flowers in the back of the store. And he heard a crackly, voice from those black boxes in the ceiling. “Blah, blah, blah…little boy…blah, blah, blah,” said the voice. Curtis didn’t listen. He had to find Mommy.

Then he remembered something else. Mommy said she needed to buy some dog food. He knew where that was because Mommy always let him help. So he zoomed over to all the pet stuff. A man was sweeping some crunchy, brown dog food off the floor. But still…no Mommy.

The man shouted, “Here he is!”

But Curtis was already running again. He plopped past the plastic bags of paper towels. He soared past the cereal. And he bolted past the broccoli. No Mommy here…no Mommy there…no Mommy anywhere.

His heart was beating fast. He felt like crying. But he kept running.

He turned to run down the cookie aisle and nearly fell down. But, finally, there she was!

“Mommy!” Curtis screamed with delight. He ran straight to her and grabbed her leg.

“Curtis, you had me so worried,” she said. “I’ve been looking all over the store for you.” He knew he was in trouble. But he also knew everything was going to be alright. “What do I always tell you, little man?” Mommy asked. “I know, Mommy, I know,” Curtis answered. “Stay close.”

Yeah, these days this story is crucial to understand. Because this world is meaner and more dangerous than ever. So, I hope it inspires you to be aware. At all times and everywhere. It’s bad enough what might happen to you if you’re not. But even worse is how you wouldn’t be around to stay connected with me.

And we can’t have that.

Take a second and join the growing body of believers who’ve already signed up for the TRUTH Journal. Every year when summertime was here

Way back in the 20th century, in a little Kansas town, of barely 1500 people, T-bud enjoyed summertime. In fact, he didn’t just enjoy it, he could barely wait for it every year. Yeah, you’d have a hard time finding anyone in the whole world who loved summertime more than T-bud.

Every year he begged his mom, for weeks, to let him go barefoot.

Matter of fact he always asked her so much that, in her aggravated mom voice, she’d say, “Theophilus Arthur Buddington! If you ask me one more time, I won’t let you go barefoot at all this summer!”

And that’s when he knew he had to just hang tight and wait.

Because he loved to feel the dusty Kansas backroads and soft, grassy fields and rolling hills on the bottoms of his feet. Now, the summer he was ten, T-bud was on one of those walks, under a mighty hot summer sun. So, he found a shade tree and walked over to find a place to sit for a while. And he was just about to do that when he spotted a rusted, old tin can sittin’ on a stump right by the creek.

He still had plenty of time to get back home before mom would get worried. So, he looked around and picked up a pocketful of rocks. Because he felt the urge to test his aim by throwing rocks at the can. Once he was satisfied he had enough good rocks, he lined up for target practice.

He got the feel of the first rock in his palm, bounced it around a couple of times to be sure, and fired off his first throw. Rats! The rock missed the can by a mile and splashed into the water. So, he threw a second rock and it bounced off the trunk of a willow tree nearby. Alright, that was it. Now, it was time to get serious. So, T-bud squinted his eyes and grabbed the smoothest, best-shaped rock.

And he threw a beautiful straight fast pitch.

And the rock caught just enough of the bottom right side of the can to make a little “tink” noise. Not the result he hoped for. But it encouraged him to keep trying.

For days, and even weeks, T-bud returned to that same stump and can and threw hundreds, maybe even thousands of rocks. So many he just plain lost count. But he didn’t just throw for the sake of throwing. He studied his own moves. And the way different shaped rocks would fly through the air. Every hit AND every miss gave him more information to help him adjust his stance and arm and wrist.

He finally got so good that he almost never missed. Yeah, you’d have to wait a long time if you watched him just to see when he’d miss. And he got that good at longer distances, too. It was unbelievable. Other kids would come by sometimes and, to them, T-bud’s rock throwing skills almost looked like a magic trick.

But summer came to an end. Then Autumn passed on by. And that ended up being the last time T-bud would throw so many rocks. Every year after that took him further away. Other summers came and went, and other interests popped up. And one of those interests changed his life forever. T-bud discovered the charm and allure of…wait for it…girls.

Then, it was all over.

Carefree summer days, strolling along with nothin’ to do but think and throw, it was all gone to the land of fond memories and distant dreams. Just like it happens, every year, for everybody.

But one day, many years later after T-bud turned into Theophilus (most called him Theo) full-time, he found his way back to that little Kansas town. And he climbed across a gate and strolled out into the green Kansas field that led to that creek and willow tree. The tree was gone. But the old stump was still there.

Theo looked around for a can or something to set up on the stump. No cans to be found. But he DID find an old piece of barn wood. So, that would have to do. Then, he found three good rocks. Yep, they were just about as good as he could hope for, and he bounced them around in his palm to get a feel.

He walked back about 50 feet. Then, he got into what he hoped was his best rock-throwing stance. And he cradled the first rock in his fingers, wound up his pitch, and threw a fast one. A miss! But he only missed by about two feet.

OK, now he got even more ready. Good stance. Loose shoulder. Good grip. Let ‘er fly. And the rock bounced off the old stump only about two inches in front of the can. Well, only one rock to go.

Theo saw little T-bud, in his mind’s eye. The kid who wouldn’t stop till he could hit the target every time. The image of himself as a boy on a mission to be the best rock thrower ever inspired Theo to put his whole heart and soul into his third and last throw.

“Here…you…go…”

The rock left Theo’s hand with just the right feel. And he felt that old, familiar feeling of a successful throw. It seemed as though the rock sailed through the air in slow motion. And it was almost as if he was able to watch himself and the rock from somewhere else. Wow, what a glorious moment in his life.

And the rock…

Uh-oh. I seemed to have misplaced what happened next. Oh man! That’s frustrating. Right when you’re about to find out the end to the story, the writer misplaces it.

Tell you what.

How ’bout you tell me what you think the ending was or should be? Yeah, send me your version of the ending. And if it’s the one that fits best, I’ll add it to the story and tell everybody you’re the one who sent it.

Sound good? Great. I’ll be watching for it. In the meantime…

There are lots of bad guys (and that includes the female part of “guys” too) out there everyday. You can’t swing a metal jump rope without hittin’ at least one.

In fact, I could tell you a story, three stories in fact, that happened one after another on three consecutive nights way back in the 20th century. Well, I’ll just share the short version of the first one.

I was beaten by a motorcycle gang. Yep. True story. A group of them arrived at a place where I worked, and I had been advised to let them know they wouldn’t be allowed in. The establishment had a dress code. And, as you might imagine, the bikers didn’t come close to meeting the standard.

They didn’t like being told to leave.

And they started to, let’s say, “raise some cane.” One thing led to another, and I found myself locked outside with no other workmates. And the biker dudes threw me on the hood of a VW and commenced to pound the daylights out of me. I knew I couldn’t take them on, so I just rolled onto my belly and protected my face and head as much as possible.

After what felt like too long, I heard sirens, and they hopped on their hawgs and took off.

Workers opened the front door after hearing the sirens and motorcycle engines. And they found me lying on the sidewalk. Of course, the management saw the huge swollen spots on my face and rushed me to a nearby hospital to be checked out. Fortunately I ended up with only minor cuts, bruises, and a concussion.

That was just the first night. Remind me to tell you what happened the next two nights.

But bad stuff ain’t all. There’s something else out there everyday, too.

The Way to be alert and aware. The Way to be prepared to avoid all, or at least most, of the baddies out there everyday. And the Way to get wiser and not just smarter.

Since too many good guys don’t have a clue how to properly handle bad guys, it’s a good idea for YOU to learn how to discern. And that’s just a fancy word that means figger some things out. But never worry. Never fear. Because, as I said, your Way is here.

Or at least the Way is a close as your bookshelf, table, or even your phone. That’s where I go when I need or want to know more about how to handle bad guy stuff. Here’s how it works:

When you wear the full armor of God,
You’ll be ready when the enemies attack.
You can’t see ’em, but beware, they are out there everywhere.
But with God’s help you can always fight them back.

BB gun wasn't fun when the exploring was done

Maybe you think of “A Christmas Story” when I share the term, BB gun. Or maybe you remember wanting one yourself once upon a time. Hopefully you’re not a scaredy cat who’s triggered (pun definitely intended) by any use of the word gun.

Whatever you think of, I’ve got a funny story about a goofy BB gun.

Once or twice upon a time Dad brought home a pellet rifle, he’d found during his workday, and gave it to my younger brother and me. OK, you probably think, “Tony, you’re supposed to be telling a BB gun story. What’s that got to do with a pellet rifle?”

Gosh, aren’t you the little detective? Sure, I know the two guns aren’t the same. But they are the same KIND. Because they both use air to fire off the ammo.

Anyway…

Dad had to work on the little rifle’s pump and trigger to get it to work well enough to use. And he did a great job because the gun worked just right after he finished. He even bought us a box of pellets. And we had some target practice for a few days till the pellets ran out.

Then, my brother and I took a quick bike trip to the sporting goods store nearby to get some more. But we discovered something extremely important. BB’s were a lot cheaper than pellets. And we figured since an air rifle can shoot either one, we’d go for the BB’s.

And the only problem would be how to aim and shoot.

As long as we aimed at something straight across or up no problem. But we couldn’t shoot at anything that was down. Because, after loading a single BB in the barrel, it would just roll back out if it was pointed down.

Kinda silly. Right? Yeah, but hey. We saved who knows how many pennies by buying BB’s. So, it was totally worth it. And for a lot of the shooting we did, we could make do.

One time, during a bike and hike journey into the wilderness, we took the BB gun to get some practice shooting at bugs and limbs and other stuff. The wilderness was just some land that followed the path of a bayou down in South Texas. We had plenty of BB’s. And a couple of our buddies came with us. We all had a blast. And we were probably out there for a few hours.

But, as young boys often do, we all got hungry and knew it was time to go home. My brother discovered his bike had a flat. I told him I’d watch it for him, after one of our friends offered to give him a ride home to get a tire patching kit. So, he jumped on the bike with his buddy and they rode across the trail.

When they were about 75 yards away, I got a crazy notion to just aim the BB gun in the air and shoot in their direction. In my young mind of mush I had pictured the BB landing in the dirt somewhere just to spook ’em.

But wouldn’t you know? (I sure wouldn’t.)

The BB fell out of the air and hit my brother on his neck. It wasn’t flying fast enough to break his skin. But I know it stung. Because he flew off the bike, turned around and saw me, and started running back at me yelling bloody murder.

If you were ever an older brother, or if you’re one now, you know how hard it would be to not laugh. Darn near impossible. But if you were ever the younger brother, or you’re one now, you can probably remember the frustration (and pain) of dealing with an older, bigger brother. Ah, good times.

OK, the morals of this story are:

  • Don’t turn a pellet rifle into a BB gun
  • Make sure you have a bike tire patch kit, especially if you’re a younger brother
  • Never fire any kind of gun in the direction of someone you don’t intend to hurt
  • Make sure your loved ones know you love them (because crazy things happen in life)

Well, there you go. An epic story of adventure from back when epic stories of adventure happened daily. Hope you enjoyed it. If you say no, I’ll go see if I still have some BB’s around here somewhere.

Leadership skills that true love instills

Play

Do these sound like masculine traits? Decisiveness, assertiveness, and confidence? I think they certainly SHOULD sound like masculine traits. And I believe those traits can be instilled into boys in ways that help them develop leadership skills.

Let me ask you this? Do you think that’s happening in America these days? I don’t. At least not as a rule. Only as the exception. The general rule has turned to females in charge of little boys. And a majority of those little boys have turned into pasty-faced, video-playing mama’s boys who act way too feminine.

And that brings me back to why a boy needs to develop leadership skills?

Well, here’s some reasoning I read in a bullet list somewhere online. It said, “Boys who are taught to lead with integrity and respect can become leaders in their communities, workplaces, and families, promoting positive change and setting examples for others.”

Yeah, OK. Nothing particularly wrong about that. But it uses two overused clichés. “Promoting positive change.” And “setting examples for others.”

And I exiled those two phrases to cliché status because they don’t actually say anything. For example, what one person might call “positive change” another person might say is too crazy to even consider. And what kinds of examples should be set for others? Who gets to determine what they should be?

I’ll tell you who, here in the FunderSphere, gets to say what positive change is and what kinds of examples should be set. Mister Tony. That’s who. Uh-oh. Did I just put myself in charge of what’s right and wrong? You bet I did. But before you go ballistic, berserk, and bonkers on me for doing something so unthinkable, let me use some of my hard-earned leadership skills and ‘splain it just a step or two further.

Because no one is good but God.

And since that includes me, I look for real truth. I found real Truth when I was only 13. And every time I’ve zig-zagged away from that Truth, I knew it was me who moved. Not Truth.

So, when I want to share actual, man-building truth with kids (at least the male kids), I go to the Manufacturer’s manual. And I look for the solid answers there that are always right. Always on target. And always based in God’s love for anyone who loves Him.

Then, I take those answers I find, in the manual, and I convert them into easy-to-understand nuggets of knowledge and insert them into Christian books for kids, rhymes, songs, and videos.

Here’s a short, to-the-point example:

There’s a life inside of you, and it comes from God,
And He wants you to live and to always enjoy
And remember He made you the person you are,
Yes, a girl is girl and a boy is a boy.

And that ain’t never gonna change no matter how much haters try to change it.

Bible stories for kids will entertain your Jack and Jill

“They” say if you’re gonna write Bible stories for kids, then those stories should be adapted to their ability to understand. I agree. To a degree.

Because I also believe Bible stories for kids can entertain with facts.

But what do I know. I never had kids. So, I have nothing to go by. Wait a sec. Believe it or not, once upon a time, back in the olden days, I WAS a kid. And I remember enjoying Bible stories that came directly from the Bible and delighted my senses.

And just about 99.99% of the time those stories were told in rhymes. I know. Big surprise. But there was always something about rhythm and rhyme that sent words into the stickiest places of my brain. And there they remain. I bet you had similar experiences. Right?

Anyway…

I brought up Bible stories for kids because, as you might know, I’ve shared a few of them right here in the FunderSphere. And some of them have magically (or at least methodically) turned into books for kids.

Did someone mention books for kids?

Oh yeah, that was me.

Par dona moi. That’s Lithuanian for “oops.” Or Portuguese. Or some language or another. No matter.

Back to the books thing. I’ve been making some entertaining updates to my book “The Very First 6 Days.” And I’ve also been working on a more efficient buying experience for you. Because if there’s anything you need, it’s a better way to get FunderBooks into your kids’ hands faster.

So, that techie stuff is on its way. In the meantime, here’s a snippet from the book. Appropriately it’s…

The Very First Day

Before there were created things, and darkness filled the air…
No world or human beings were existing anywhere.
Then God created earth and sea and all the heavens too.
There was no sun, no moon, no stars, and only God shone through.

He looked down at the waters and the dark face of the deep.
The earth was still and quiet just as we are when we sleep.
He said, “Let there be light” the way a perfect, true God could,
And then He saw the brand new light and knew that it was good.

Then God divided light and dark, and darkness He called Night.
The light would be called Day, and it was pleasing in His sight.
That evening and that morning wouldn’t be the total sum…
No, that was just the very first day…five were yet to come.

Sharp talk for this here walk

Here’s a little more sharp talk for ya. And, just so you know, I’m not a Greek expert. Actually not even a Greek amateur. But there are some who dig more deeply into Greek translation to get a better understanding of what different parts of the Bible mean. Here’s an example of that, from Ronald Giese Jr., using the word “sharpen.”

“This is how the ancient Greek translations of the Hebrew Bible may have understood the meaning of the word ‘sharpen.’ They translate it with a Greek term that can mean ‘to urge or stimulate’ but also ‘to provoke or irritate’ (παροξύνω). And in the rest of the Greek Old Testament, that verb is only ever used to mean ‘to provoke” (e.g. Num 14:11; Deut 1:34; 9:19; Ps 106:29; Hos 8:5). ‘Sharpening’ someone else, then, could mean provoking or irritating them.”

Ok, if you have a different understanding of that sharp talk, let me know.

But, from what I’ve seen, it makes sense. And it certainly plays out in the so-called “discussions” I’ve seen Christians place on social media for the world to see (not the best idea).

Now, to continue with what Mr. Giese shared, check out what he calls…

“The Practicalities of Sharpening Iron

In the ancient world, the concept of ‘ironing sharpening iron’ would be easily associated with the use of an iron hammer to form a heated weapon or tool. What this iron hammer does not do is ‘sharpen’ the other tool. When we think of ‘sharpening’ today, we think of sharpening pencils or sharpening knives. But ancient iron tools could not be used to ‘file’ or ‘sharpen’ other iron tools. And what would happen is that both iron pieces would become dull.

‘Iron sharpening iron’ refers to the preparation of a weapon, of something ready for battle. Paired with the second half of Proverbs 27:17, the sharpening of someone’s face, this proverb concerns provoking another person so that they become antagonistic toward you. And the context of the verse doesn’t suggest what is the cause of this ‘sharpening.’ But Giese Jr. suggests that it may be if two people spend too much time in conversation, it may lead to heated or foolish discussion.”

Just like what I mentioned above and in my last post.

Those heated discussions can be found just about everywhere. And I remember Paul told Timothy to not to “give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.” Paul understood how human recollection can be biased and flawed. So, it serves no useful purpose for Christians to “sharpen” one another in those ways. As Mr. Giese said, that has caused us to go…

“Backwards the Whole Time.” He explained it this way:

“This seems so straightforward. So, how could we have missed it? Strangely, it’s the English translation of ‘sharpening’ that has caused us to presume that the phrase ‘iron sharpens iron’ means something good. We’ve read our own understanding of ‘sharpening’ back into Proverbs 27:17. But as we have seen, that’s not what it meant in the original context of the text. And a further problem we have is that the expression ‘iron sharpens iron’ still does mean something positive for the majority of English speakers out there. And it’s unlikely that we will be able to change that usage. What we can change, however, is our understanding of Proverbs 27:17.”

And this is how Mr. Giese finished up his point (which I believe is totally valid):

“In our world today, social media has made ‘iron sharpening iron’ an everyday occurrence. But not in a good way. The constant bickering on Facebook, notifications about replies to your comments, and share features which invite strangers to reply to your posts in all caps have led to all of us spending too much time in heated discussion. Add a pandemic and we have the perfect forge for iron to sharp iron. Maybe we should take some time away from being ‘social’ online. Then maybe we’ll be able to stop ‘sharpening’ each other’s faces.”

I sang about that sharp talk in a song I wrote way back in 1999.

High Horses

Up on the foothills of peace,
Leaving the cares of the world so far below,
Riding the crest; not the crease,
We have, and we give some back so we can know.

Long as we don’t hurt the weak,
Refrain from the covetous thoughts and deeds in kind,
We can remain on the peak,
Covered and out of harm’s way, but we’re so blind!

We’re riding our high horses.
We’re wearing our best leather and lace.
Yeah, we’re riding our high horses,
Hoping to ride them away,
Ride them to favor and grace!

Up on the mountains of self,
Looking inside of our hearts, we think we see.
Fallible searchers are we.
Without a standard to judge, how high we can be!

repeat chorus – short instrumental

To think ourselves wise we soon become fools!
We’re panning for gold while we give up our jewels!

repeat chorus and end with instrumental

The number 9 is mighty fine and kinda like a sign

The number 9 took on a whole new value for me this morning. Hopefully you’ll find this so fascinating you’ll say, “Wow, Tony. It’s amazing how well you entertain us with your knowledge of insignificant and trivial things.”

Well, hopefully the number 9 will keep you in that state of awe.

Did you know, for example, that the number 9 always retains its identity? This is uncanny. It’s almost unbelievable. In fact, it puts the un in Funderburk. That’s how undeniably amazing it is. What’s that you say? What do I even mean? And why don’t I show you what I mean? OK, how’s about this?

You can multiply the number 9 by any number. And eventually it reduces back to its numerical value. Try 9×2. That equals 18. Then you add 1 + 8 and you get 9. 9×3 equals 27. And (you already see it) 2 + 7 equals 9. So, in numerology, this quality symbolizes power, strength, and stability.

Not impressed yet?

How ’bout this?

I’m an open Theist. A friend of mine, who was also an open Theist pastor, used to say “God can create a new butterfly if He wants. And He could write a new song if He so desired.” And I couldn’t agree more. But I’ll go one more step. I believe God, the Son, IS the ultimate New Song.

He was crucified and died at hour 9 of that day, or 3 p.m., to make the way of salvation open to everyone. And that was a new Way never before available to everyone.

Plus, that new Way provided what we know as the “fruit of the Spirit.” And there are nine of them: faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, joy, kindness, long suffering, love, peace, and self-control. When Paul wrote about them, it was something new. Attributes the long, long years of the law hadn’t produced:

You might say, a new song in your heart. Well, you might not say that. But I certainly will.

Here’s another factoid I luv. Jesus made live appearances 9 different times after He resurrected from the dead. Once to Mary Magdalene. Once to two men traveling to Emmaus. Then once to a group of 500 believers and his half-brother James. And then, He showed himself five other times to different apostles.

OK, here’s something that’s really gonna gitcha. At least if you have a soul.

I just discovered that “The phrase, new song, occurs nine times in Scripture. Six times in the Psalms. Once in Isaiah. And twice in Revelation. In every instance, the reference is to a song of praise addressed to God, usually because of his salvation of people.”

So, here’s how I see it. When you sing a “new song” to THE New Song, you take music to a whole ‘nother level. And that’s like pouring Living Water on all those fruits of the Spirit. And that, my friend, is powerful (like the number 9) with a capital POW.

That kind of info inspired me to write lyrics like this:

I’m gonna leave my cares and troubles far behind
I’m gonna live this brand new life that I’ve designed?
And I’m gonna love discovering which way to go.
I’m gonna laugh and then say yes instead of no.
