Time in a bottle? Ease up on the throttle.

I remember sitting in my mom’s living room, with headphones on, listening to Jim Croce’s album, “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim.” The title song, about a bar fight, was a hit. But another hit on the album was, “Time In A Bottle.”

The original key signature, for Time In A Bottle, was D minor.

I don’t have airtight confirmation on that. But most sources seem to agree it was D minor. The main point is, it’s a minor key. And when you want a song to sound melancholy, mournful, or even downright morbid, you can’t go wrong with the minor keys.

Anyway…

Mr. Croce wrote the lyrics to Time In A Bottle after finding out his wife was pregnant. And when you listen to the words (or read them below), you hear, see, AND feel the sad understanding of how even the best times don’t last.

Notice how each of the verses start with “if.” And when you hear them sung, in that sad minor key, you can feel the “if only” longing. The desire to hold on to the moment and never let it go.

Sadly, Jim Croce found out, all too violently, how quickly this life can pass. He died in a plane crash on the way to a concert on September 20th 1973. He was only 30. And just about three months later, on this day (December 29), this song went to Number 1.

Time In A Bottle

If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I’d like to do
Is to save every day ’til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I’d save every day like a treasure, and then
Again, I would spend them with you

But there never seems to be enough time
To do the things you want to do once you find them
I’ve looked around enough to know
That you’re the one I want to go through time with

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty
Except for the memory of how they were answered by you.

Be sure you take time to enjoy and appreciate God’s gift of life today.

Favor and grace are here just in case

Favor and grace sound favorable and gracious to me. But maybe I’m just being too literal. And maybe those words aren’t conducive to your ability, or willingness, to sharing information about eternity. And maybe I should clarify why I’m bringing this up.

First, here’s a quote from a king who lived a long time ago in a land far, far away. “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

Now, contrast that with something that king’s dad (who was also a king) wrote, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

That first quote was from King Solomon. And he’s the king who was given wisdom from God. And you can see a lot of wisdom in his writings. Proverbs especially. In fact, that link, in the quote, will take you to the section in Solomon’s proverbs where he wrote that. But here’s the thing. I don’t know positively, for a fact, but it seems highly likely that Solomon did not go to Heaven when he died.

Because Solomon squandered the favor and grace he had received.

By many accounts he took 700 wives and 300 concubines for himself. (side note: I don’t know how any man could manage more than 1 wife, let alone 700) And I read a blurb, somewhere, that said that many wives and concubines “showed Solomon had intermarried with all the nations, that he had in some way extended his dominion to the ends of the earth.”

In contrast, King David (Solomon’s dad) had 8 wives. And that’s still 7 too many, but I digress. Anyway, the contrast between David and Solomon is evident when you contrast the book of Ecclesiastes with The Psalms.

OK, I guess I still haven’t cleared up why I brought any of this up. And it’s because I’d rather see you, if you’re a Christian, focus more on the goodness and mercy parts and less on the iron sharpens iron parts. Especially if you seek favor and grace from God.

Because the goodness and mercy parts help to foster humility. And those iron sharpens iron parts tend to foster haughtiness. I’ve seen it way too often. And that’s why I wrote a song, back in 2000, called “High Horses.” It talks about the perils of thinking too highly of yourself.

And no one is automatically immune to that kind of pride.

So, anytime you feel the urge to use some of your iron to sharpen somebody else’s iron, pause. And think about whether it truly falls under the “love your neighbor as yourself” category. Make sure it would help you express God’s favor and grace to those who love Him.

We’re riding our high horses.
And we’re wearing our best leather and lace.
We’re riding our high horses,
Hoping to ride them away,
Ride them to favor and grace!

Candace Cameron Bure in a media purée

Candace Cameron Bure (last name rhymes with purée…and that sounds a bit like hooray) recently took a stand. No, not in a court of law. But it sure was in the court of public opinion. And opinions were mostly positive from people who matter and very negative from people who don’t.

In case you’re not familiar, Candace Cameron Bure is a Christian.

Of course, most of the media will describe her as “is an American actress, producer, author and television personality.” And that’s all true, too. But not nearly as important as how I described her.

And Candace Cameron Bure (let’s just call her Candace from now…Ok?) landed in what some might call hot water recently. Because she took a stand for “traditional marriage.”

If you watch Hallmark movies enough, you might catch her in some of her roles on that network. But Candace was hired as CEO, this year, by Great American Media. And they seem to be leaning more toward Christian-focused programming. For example, Hallmark (their “rival”) decided to produce a holiday movie totally about a so-called “LGBT love story.” And when Candace was interviewed about whether or not her new network would do that, she said, “I think that Great American Family will keep traditional marriage at the core.”

And, naturally, the tolerant, diversity-loving media said that was awesome.

NOT.

No, for the most part, they’ve lambasted Candace with harsh criticism for her stand on traditional morals?! And doesn’t she care that she was “rude and hurtful to a whole community of people?”

Hmm. Don’t they care that they’re rude and hateful to Candace and a whole community of people?

Short answer? NO. Longer answer? Not only do they NOT care, but they enjoy saying the most harsh and hurtful things they can imagine. And they enjoy the fact that they get a pass on their hate speech.

I read an article that talked about how Candace’s daughter, Natasha, stood up for her mom. She said “The media is an absolutely VILE space for negativity.” Yes it is. And, on social media channels, Natasha posted this about her mom, “As they continuously twist the narrative to beat down on the Kingdom, you stand firm in faith and never let others dim your light for Him. No matter how out of context or warped the words may get, the enemy will not prevail.”

By the way, in case you don’t know, the “enemy” is Lucifer, aka: satan.

Natasha also said, “Society has gotten completely out of hand with believing every strategically worded headline broadcasted by the media, followed by cancel culture, which is nothing but ugly.” And then she added this about Candace, “The Lord shines through you time and time again.”

I haven’t followed her career. But I know Candace was one of the kids on the TV show, Full House. I never watched that show. And she reprised her role in Fuller House. Then, she continued her career, as an actress, down the same path as most others. She even lived with the guy who eventually became her husband. But that was after talking with her brother, Kirk Cameron.

He let God’s light shine through him to his sister. And now they’re both outspoken about their Christian faith. But they’ve both endured the world’s attempts at mocking and ridicule. And that’s what happens when you’re willing to take a stand against “lifestyles” God is against. I’ll bet Candace and Kirk will tell you it’s worth it, though. Because they know the forever perspective is the one that counts.

I’m searching for the sanctity
T
hat I never do quite find.
I’m longing for the living days
T
hat never, ever end.
I’m thinking so theatrically.
B
ut at least I use my mind
To quest for the quintessence
O
f my Forever Friend.  (from my song “The Pure Place”)

Music duos come and go. Different views can make it so.

This week, back in 1979, I lived and worked in Houston, Texas. My brother and I had established ourselves as one of the more popular music duos. And we had fans we could depend on to come see us as we performed all around the city. It was quite an experience for me. Actually making a living playing live music.

But my brother and I didn’t remain one of those popular music duos.

Our personality differences drove a wedge between us. And that wedge was eventually filled in with concrete as our worldviews increasingly moved in opposite directions.

To quote from some Bernie Taupin lyrics, “It’s sad. So sad. It’s a sad, sad situation. And it’s gettin’ more and more absurd.” That’s from the Elton John song, “Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word.” But an apology isn’t what the broken relationship, with my brother, requires. And what it DOES require is something even more difficult.

Humility.

Not the kind of humility that requires one of us to submit to the will or worldview of the other. But the kind of humility that’s required in order to acknowledge where we all came from. And why we’re here. And that this life, here on Earth, isn’t all there is to life.

One worldview says that everything in existence is God or the God force. So, that worldview would have you believe you’re, at the very least, a part of that total God force. And at the very worst, that you and God are one. They’ll give you silly affirmations like “Divine life renews every cell in my body.” And yet each one of them grows old and dies.

The other worldview says the God is the only sovereign, uncaused, uncreated Creator. He is eternal from the past through the future. And He created everything else in existence. From angels to zebras. And He created only humans in His image and likeness. So, only you and I are free to choose whether or not we want to love Him.

Almost all famous music duos prefer the first worldview.

But there was one member of one of those duos who chose the second worldview. And he writes short letters, almost every day, to anyone who wants to read them. There’s a link, below, where you can have those letters come directly to your inbox.

And here’s what that guy says to all those people who choose to teach that first worldview. It’s a quote from the band who had the Number 1 album on the charts this week, way back in 1979. Pink Floyd, in their song, “Another Brick In The Wall,” said this…

“Hey, teacher, leave them kids alone.”

Worldview

Masterplans and incidents
Faster man…more accidents
What does this all mean?
Could be soylent green.

Trolley cars to rocket ships
Honesty…insider tips
Do you catch my drift?
The paradigm did shift.

It’s a worldview that’s not for me and you.
It’s a worldview and no empirical thoughts.
Yeah, It’s a worldview. What’s a humanist to do?
Don’t you see you could be in tougher spots?
You gotta be mindful where you cast your lots.
It’s a worldview.

CrackerJack and Disneyland
Scorin’ crack and lyrics banned
Gets better everyday…just cast those sins away.

Right and wrong? Who thought of that?
Some guys who thought the world was flat?
Now we’ve learned to see…no one’s the boss of “me”.

Chorus

Givin’ up, givin’ in…not a whimper, no shout.
Now the climate is warm, and the fools come out.
Get in touch with yourself and the innermost child…
And the “still small voice” is cast away; exiled.

Christmas song for all year long

Merry Christmas. And I hope you have an awesome New Year’s Eve and 2023. Here’s a Christmas song I wrote that I believe is a good message for any and all days of the year. (lyrics are in the video and below)

Here’s the link if you don’t automatically see the video: (https://youtu.be/zdcDUknj9NM)

(FYI: there’s a short blurb at the end of the video that says you can get this song and two others when you jump on the The TRUTH. That’s my email list. But those songs aren’t currently available. Other songs ARE still included when you subscribe.)

Here are the lyrics to this Christmas song…

I Believe In The God of Christmas
Some believe there’s just today…
And then we die and fade away…
Such a sad and hopeless life to lead.

Others say we never die…
We all live on above the sky…
Disregard the theft and hate and greed.

But I believe in the God of Christmas,
I believe in His Gift to us all,
And I believe that He died to save us
And that He rose to recover our fall.
Yes I believe in the God who loves us,
And I believe in the God who lives,
Yes I believe in the God of Christmas.
He gave His love, and He still freely gives.

One day soon we just may find
So many millions left behind
In a world where truth is torn apart.
Then no lights, no Christmas trees…
No arts and no humanities…
Will bring peace to any broken heart.

The one day about The Way

It’s the one day of the year when the world is as close to peace on Earth as we’re gonna get. And even then, it’s light years away from true peace on Earth.

So, how’s that for starting out with happy thoughts?

But it actually IS good news for anyone who’s interested in Truth. And I think that’s why Christmas has been such a HUGE deal here in America. We’re a nation founded on Christian principles even though we’ve strayed so far away it doesn’t seem like it anymore. But I still know the reason for the season. And it’s why I write and sing songs about it.

Christmas Is The One Day

You wake up on Christmas
And find that the whole world’s dressed in Grace,
A whole different place.

It’s only on Christmas
And no other day rings half as true
It’s ringin’ for you.

And Christmas is the one day
When God became a man…
When Peace on earth began…
And ended…so fast.

But Christmas is the one day
The hope can rise again…
Inside the hearts of men…
So why don’t…we make…it last?

When you’re livin’ in Christmas
And keepin’ the Gift inside your heart,
It’s like a new start.

There’s nothing like Christmas
To give you back what you gave away.
So, tell me, what do you say…?

Chorus

It’s not about your riches
That will leave you when you die.
It’s the Love of The Creator
That should keep your spirit high.

Christmas Spirit song that isn't very long

I thoroughly loved a couple of headlines I saw, this week, from The Babylon Bee. Actually I saw several. But these two tie in nicely with the Christmas Spirit song I’m sharing today. One headline said, “Hallmark Researchers Say They Are Close To Developing A Second Movie Plot.” Hilarious! And the other said, “Chris Tomlin Proud To Unveil Completely New And Original Christmas Song, Silent Night.”

If you don’t watch Hallmark, that first headline might not make sense. But the reason it’s funny is because of how predictable 99.99% of Hallmark’s movies are.

And if you’re not familiar with Chris Tomlin, you won’t understand the wry humor behind the headline. He’s a “Contemporary Christian” singer songwriter who remakes old standard hymns and Christian music. And some have said he “makes them his own.”

So, there you go. Just a little Christmas humor to kick off this special weekend. Now, enjoy my non-sappy, little message about getting rid of your inner Scrooge.

The Christmas Spirit Song

Didn’t wanna drive and look at no Christmas lights.
Didn’t wanna have to shovel no Christmas snow.
And I didn’t wanna scream out loud in the middle of a Christmas crowd.
Didn’t wanna have to say why I wouldn’t go.

And I didn’t wanna sing no sappy little Christmas songs.
Didn’t wanna see no perky little Christmas kid.
Didn’t wanna shop at no mall or spend any money at all.
And I didn’t wanna leave my house, but I’m glad I did.

‘Cause I could see it…I could hear it…
I could feel the Christmas Spirit.
Every moment…every minute…
I was thankful I was in it.
Now I savor every second when I’m near it…
The Christmas Spirit.

Didn’t wanna get up early on Christmas day.
Didn’t wanna eat no ham or no Christmas pie.
And I didn’t wanna have to get dressed for any sort of Christmas guest.
Didn’t wanna smile, but I changed, and here is why:

‘Cause I could see it…I could hear it…
I could feel the Christmas Spirit.
Every moment…every minute…
I was thankful I was in it.
Now I savor every second when I’m near it…
The Christmas Spirit.

Music makes us human. I'm talking to YOU, man.

I’m biased (and also right) about this. Music makes us human. And “scientists” agree with me. So, there. OK, I’ll drop the attitude and share some gratitude.

But there IS a lot of evidence that music makes us human.

No, it’s obviously not the only thing. And not even the main thing. But music is an amazing and complicated marker, among many markers, for what makes us human.

I read an article about how people with advanced dementia can make sudden, remarkable improvements in cognition when they hear familiar music. “Scientists” discovered how music can “wake up” brains that are almost completely gone. The article I read said the results they saw were “sometimes truly magical and inexplicable.” (side note: their use of inexplicable is why I put quotation marks around “scientists”)

Anyway…

Those “scientists” said those dementia sufferers seem to “come back” for a bit as they listen to familiar songs they love. And they call music a “proto-language.” Think of it as how parents talk to a baby.

So. A music is a language, eh? I believe I’ve mentioned that a lot more than once here on my website. And I’ve talked about how that’s just one of many indicators that evolution is a stupid theory. And those “scientists” determined that “music appreciation appears to be embedded or wired into nearly all regions of the brain.”

“Wired into.” Hmm…that would imply a wirer. Someone who wired music into your brain.

Who ever could that have been?

Also, those same “scientists” say that “music seems to be tied in closely with love and relationships.” What possible evolutionary purpose would that serve? (that was a rhetorical question)

Finally, the research shows that music has a “clear, powerful physiological effect” on social bonding. And because of that the conclusion appears to be self evident. It’s so important to your brain’s design that music is “an indispensable part of what makes us human.”

Give me songs to wake the brain waves
Through my often cluttered mind.
Give me sonic repercussions
No one else will ever find.
And a musical sensation
With connections to the source
Of all music and creation.
Yes, please give me that, of course.

Cowboys and ranch hands ain’t the only ones who have to mend some fences once in a while. Regular guys who say the wrong thing (yes, it happens) need a good way to do that with their wives or girlfriends, too. So, how do you do it? Well, roses are almost perfect. They’re beautiful, they smell nice, and women love them. Why? Because they’re beautiful and they smell nice. Duh!

And what does it matter WHY they love them. It’s just important to know they DO. Well, it’s important to know, if a loving relationship is important to you. And it BETTER BE.

But I don’t mean one of those lusting kinds of relationships. Nope. I’m talking about your favorite subject. Love.

So, do you need to mend some fences?

Ok, here’s what you need for a stronger, longer-lasting relationship with your wives or girlfriends. Ready?

  • roses
  • lyrics
  • love.

That’s it. I know you can take care of the roses and love. And I’ve got you covered with some lyrics. They’re more for YOU than they are for her. So, I suggest you internalize them. And if you see yourself in them, then learn from them.

When I was a singer songwriter in Nashville in the middle 90’s, I was almost always the only keyboard player on showcase nights. One of those nights I took an offbeat song with a key signature played mostly on the black keys. A guitar playing songwriter who sat behind me commented to the audience that he really liked it. And the host for the night had me play it again.

It was a song about roses and how they help mend some relationship fences.

Here are the words so you’ll be fully equipped. If you wanna hear the old song, you’ll have to Get my Podcast. And look back through the archives. (or email me for a link if you like)

Roses To The Rescue

She says he’s not the boy he used to be.
He slams a door in a fit of disgust.
It’s bitter and crude; they’d better change their attitude
So another statistic bites the dust.

He says he’s sure he’s not the one to blame
And she insists that it wasn’t her.
It’s all by the book; they’d better take another look
So another statistic won’t occur.

They need some”

Roses to the rescue…apologies and candlelight
Roses to the rescue…’cause no one’s wrong and no one’s right.
If you hope to pass this ancient test , you…
Better find you some roses to rescue.

She says that he can just go sleep alone
And he yells that would be just fine.
Well they need to know where this argument will go
“˜Cause another statistic’s on the line

They need some…     Chorus

I don’t know why they have to fight
I only know it isn’t right…it isn’t right

We need some”
Chorus..inst..repeat chorus to end

One hundred and nineteen years ago, today, at approximately 10:35 in the morning, a couple of guys became household names. Well, it didn’t actually happen immediately. But once they did what they did, they were never gonna be forgotten. Because they literally flew off in the right direction. And things would never be the same.

I said, “the right direction,” but…

Maybe I should’ve said the Wright Direction.

Yeah, that’s a dead giveaway. Wright? Oops, I mean, right?

I’m sure you’ve guessed, by now, I’m talking about Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright. They’re the guys who are credited with being the first to invent, build, and fly an airplane. Most everyone else who had tried used clunky, clumsy, and uncontrolled “flying machines.” But Orville and Wilbur figured out how to control flight.

Pretty important if you wanna leave the ground and return safely. Wouldn’t you say?

Anyway…

The brothers flew their plane, they called the Wright Flyer (I think that’s a great name for a plane that went the right direction for them) four times. It was mid-morning on December 17, 1903. The first flight lasted about 12 seconds. And the plane zoomed along at a breathtaking 6.8 miles per hour. Of course, I’m poking a little fun. But with my “fear” of heights, I won’t kid around about the 120 feet altitude they achieved. That’s impressive.

And the Wright brothers were able to do that because they figured out how to invent a system the pilot could use to control the aircraft during flight. It was what they called a three-axis control system. And would you believe it’s still the standard on airplanes today?

Wow. That’s impressive, too.

OK, maybe I’m not telling you something you didn’t know about that first famous flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. But I bet you didn’t know how much Orville and Wilbur attributed their success to their strong family upbringing. According to an article I read, their parents taught the boys that the world is an unfriendly place. And that it’s filled with untrustworthy people and evil temptations.

What?! Say it ain’t so, Joe. Unfriendly, untrustworthy people and evil temptations even back in the 1800’s? But the Wright family, with its “uncompromising moral philosophy and clear worldview,” nurtured a lot of Orville and Wilbur’s self-confidence. And that helped them pursue their own ideas instead of going with the theories and experiments of more well-known aeronautical experts.

And the support of their family also helped the Wright brothers to keep going in the right direction in spite of the obstacles they faced.

These days, boys (and girls for that matter) from lots of families don’t think clearly about their own gender. Much less about the math and research it would take to get some wood and a motor off the ground. And that’s because so many kids don’t have a family with “uncompromising moral philosophy and clear worldview.” And that’s more than a shame.

It’s a travesty against design.

But I won’t bore you with the whole going-against-what-God-says-about-it thing. Because I don’t wanna mess up your holidays. But maybe think about, as you go about your festivities for the next couple of weeks, how there might be a couple of brothers somewhere right now who could change the world. And think about how they might never do that because this world mocks morality and family.

We’re not flying in the right direction
When we leave behind the strong affection
Of a mother and a dad like America once had.
Thanks for tuning into my objection.

Stay tuned,

Start something new. Not tomorrow. That won't do.

Tomorrow is not the time to start something new. Because tomorrow is a concept. Because humans need that concept to help us understand the flowing of time. And even though it helps to include tomorrow in your understanding of time, it never actually gets here.

Then, on the other hand, tomorrow is already here. On the other side of the world at the international date line area. But those people who live on the other side of it don’t live in the future. To them, it’s today. It’s right now.

So, if they start something new right now, they start today.

It’s all so discombobulated. Except when you realize you absolutely DO have a future.

You can’t keep it from happening any more than you can keep the sun from shining.

And that’s why I talk about the power of love so much. Not the wimpy, limp-wristed, “tolerance and diversity” nonsense that attempts to pass itself off as love these days. Nope. I mean the love so powerful it makes the moon revolve around the Earth and the sun to shine with light and warmth.

And that all happens in a universe that’s logical, yet magical. Reasonable, yet unbelievably huge.

For that kind of expansive evidence to exist, there MUST be a Designer even more expansive. I’d be a fool to say otherwise.

Since the evidence points to a Designer, a Creator, it’s a good idea to see if there’s more we can know about that person. Turns out, there’s a LOT more. Yeah, He wrote a bestselling book. No, that’s wrong. He wrote THE bestselling book of all time. The Bible. Maybe you’ve heard of it?

And that book says God started something new several thousand years ago.

The “heavens and the Earth.” Maybe you’ve heard of ’em? And after He created a perfect living environment He created a couple of perfect people. And He showed ’em their paradise. And He didn’t do all that for funsies. It wasn’t just something to pass the time. It was an awesome act of love.

And because you can see love throughout the Bible, you can understand how and why you can love. At least if you’re willing to understand. Most people aren’t. But I’m willing. And that’s why I’m sharing this song…

Because I Can Love

What made You think
That I was worth the risk You took?
What made You take the time
To write Your Holy Book?
I don’t believe I’d give myself a second look,
But You did because You love.

You made a world
That was as perfect as could be,
But then I broke it
When You gave it all to me…
By going through the gate You made to set me free.
This You did because You love…me.

Because You love me so…in spite of all You know…
Because You did the most that You could ever do…
Because I clearly see…evidence of You in me…
Because I can love…I do love…You!

You put a life
And a will inside my soul.
You knew true love
Would be to give me full control.
But knowing You is all that ever makes me whole.
I trust You because You love…me.

I can live because You live!
I can love because You love!

The dreams that remain are the ones you maintain

Visionaries dream. And the best visionaries understand the need for dreams to change, to ebb and flow. But they also know how the dreams that remain can make the world a better place.

Take this one for example. A well-known speaker from back in the 1960’s said, “I have a dream today. I have a dream that one day every valley shall be engulfed, every hill shall be exalted and every mountain shall be made low. The rough places will be made plains. And the crooked places will be made straight. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

If only that could be one of those dreams that remain.

When Martin Luther King, Jr. said those words, all those years ago, I’ll bet his heart was full of hope. But, if you’ve heard, read, or seen the news, lately, you know his dream has not aged well.

Still, I believe that dreamers are not only nice to have around, they’re essential. So, if you fall under the the dreamer category, or if know a young adult (or even child) who does, don’t stop dreaming. And never forget to remember to thank your Creator for that beautiful brain of yours. Without it you and I can’t…

Dream The Dreams

Waking up from silly dreams
Isn’t silly as it seems
Because dreamers are what makes the world go ’round.
With those pictures in your head
As you rise up out of bed
You might find the thing that needed to be found.
You might dream of flying cars
That go cruising through the stars,
Then design a brand new turbo rocket ship.
You might wake up from your sleep
With an awesome way to keep
People safer when they’re going on a trip.
What if you could dream a dream
That, to some, could sound extreme.
But your idea helped to ease a lot of pain?
Well, put on your dreaming hat
‘Cause we need more dreams like that,
And they’re waiting to be dreamed inside your brain.
If you’re eager to create,
And you find you just can’t wait,
And your dreams are overflowing from your ears,
Take a breath and write ’em down,
With a smile and not a frown.
Then your dreams become ideas you’ll have for years.
When you dream, don’t think it’s odd.
Dreams are thoughtful gifts from God.
They can help to give your weary mind some rest.
So relax and dream away.
Every day’s a brand new day
To begin to dream the dreams that you dream best.

Logos 10 Review that I hope is right for YOU

I love the Logos 10 software package on my MacBook Air M1. And it’s the Bible app of choice I keep at the top left of my iPhone Home screen.  Because, right from the opening, it’s a great way to take a deeper, yet user-friendly, dive into the Bible. If you’re looking for a gift that’ll keep on giving for the rest of someone’s life, here it is.

When you open the software, on a computer, you find your dashboard and an extensive array of helpful suggested links on the middle/right side. And on the left side, you see quick links to your library, search tool, your Bible, a very useful Factbook, documents, guides/workflows, and other tools. At the bottom left you’ll find a link to set up your preferred layout.

Explore a little further inside Logos 10 to discover how you can…

  • select your favorite books,
  • customize your home page,
  • read a Bible or devotional,
  • read a Bible with commentary,
  • study a subject more in-depth,
  • study words in a passage,
  • search your Bible for words and phrases or study words “from scratch,”
  • search through the Bible with shortcuts,
  • search all your books,
  • follow a planned study or create your own study space

For decades I carried my physical Bible to church. And, to this day, there’s something both nostalgic and appealing in the tactile act of turning physical pages in a vintage Bible. But, now, I prefer my Bible app exponentially more. Because, when it comes to learning about the book God wrote to us, there’s so much more to gain.

And when I say “more,” I mean so much more you’ll never get to it all.

Under your “library” link alone, there’s a mind-boggling list of resources. And you can even add more. Because there are also resources in lots of other languages. So, if like cross-referencing, you’ll love Logos 10.

When you think about it, information isn’t physical. So, it makes sense that a digital Bible, with its ability to provide access to so many resources at the tap of finger would be such an engaging experience. You can even track and measure your progress through reading plans, courses, and other studies.

I’m not gonna tell you that Logos 10 and the Logos app are better than your physical Bible. Because that’s a subjective choice. But I WILL say that if you’d like to get a constant teaching/learning companion that’s as close as your pocket, at all times, you won’t find a better choice than Logos 10.

By the way. You’ll notice the links when I use the title, Logos 10. Yes, those are affiliate links. And if you use one of those links and buy something from them, I’ll make a small commission. But I’m not sharing affiliate links to just make money. Because I wouldn’t share these links if I didn’t use (and thoroughly enjoy) this software. If you get anything from Logos, let me know your thoughts. But I bet you’ll love this software.

Stay tuned,

Optimistic voice for the only PRO choice

The most serious issue facing our nation and the world isn’t fiscal. It’s physical. And it isn’t gun control or rock-n-roll. It’s mind control and your very soul. The most serious issue this world faces starts in the heart (which is not to be trusted, by the way, so don’t blindly follow your heart). But I want mine to be an optimistic voice in the middle of all the doom and gloom talk. Not to diminish the reality of the doom and gloom. But to be a reminder of the Hope we have.

Back in 2007 I put an optimistic voice to “The Belly Song.”

“The Belly Song” celebrates life. And how it begins in a belly, so to speak. Here’s the video I made for a song. It’s part of my music for kids. But adults have told me they get a kick out of it, too. And I hope you’ll enjoy the optimistic voice approach. Feel free to let me know, either way. Here ya go…

I dearly love that I’m alive. Don’t you? And I don’t take it for granted. Well, not all the time anyway. I get to think, live, laugh, and love. And I believe it’s every person’s right to have those same gifts.

Every person!

And every person started somewhere. It wasn’t in a hospital. Every person starts life in a mother’s womb. That’s one of the easiest things in the world to prove. Where things get muddy (for those who are easily confused) is how soon can we say a person is a person in the womb.

Personally, I have no problem saying a person is a person from their very beginning.

But maybe you can’t say for sure WHEN your personhood begins. You still know, without a doubt, WHERE it begins. And for now (despite the efforts of freaky so-called scientists) that’s still in a mother’s womb. And I know all it took for me to exist outside my mother’s womb was for everyone to leave me alone inside my mother’s womb. Mom and Dad and doctors and society let me get from point A to point B. No one chose to abort that life-affirming process.

Simplest biology lesson there is. Any questions?

I hope you’ll join me with your own optimistic voice and remember we ALL were belly babies. Once upon a time.

After you fall, is that truly all?

Play

You fell for it. And you did what had to be done. “They” said it’s YOUR choice. And you certainly made it. So, after you fall for a choice, like this, what’s left? Well, a glorious life filled with endless choices that can lead to your fulfillment and happiness. Right? Hmm. Let’s go to the video replay. And let’s see what others say.

Yep, the women in the video chose themselves over the life of an unborn baby. And they figured it would all be over once “it” was over. But that didn’t prove to be true. It wasn’t all “they” pumped it up to be?

How is your life after abortion? I’m guessing that, if you’re genuinely honest about it, your answer is similar to the people in the video.

But here’s the truth, even after you fall.

You have not committed the unpardonable sin if you’ve chosen the abortion option. The unpardonable sin would be to deny that Jesus is your Creator and the only one who can save you from yourself. Imagine living the torment those people in the video described. And then imagine that you eventually die and “exist” in a one-person universe for all eternity. That would be infinitely worse.

It’s easy to escape. Simply acknowledge what all of creation clearly illustrates.

There IS a God. You’re not Him. And He has the power and life of eternity in Him.

Clearly, there are at least 3 victims for every abortion. The baby. The mother. And the father. For the unborn baby there is no life, here on Earth, after abortion.

But for the mother and father, there’s the potential for a forgiven, abundant life. A life where you can help others to choose life. Or there’s the potential for nagging, gnawing internal torment.

Let me recommend the first of those two options.

You can’t run away from real truth.
And every word of truth is a knife.
A captivating voice might pigeonhole your choice,
Cut free…and choose life.

Katy bar the door. There's nothin's sacred anymore.

Katy, bar the door. Because I’m gonna share some truth from a Russian. (gasp!) Yeah, you read that right. I found the one Russian who was understood truth and actually shared it. And I don’t want anyone leaving till everyone has heard or read this. So, let me repeat…

Katy, bar the door.

(side note): Have you ever wondered where that phrase, Katy bar the door, originated? It might have been from this poem, The Old Smithy, published back in 1841. It said…

“The snow is drifting on the ground,
And loud the east wind roars;
Come, men and maidens, hide you in;
Kate, bar those creaking doors.

“Call in the dogs, rouse up the fire;
And, mistress, do you hear?
Heat us a jug of elder wine,
For the night is chill and drear.”

But, let’s get back to more meaningful point.

I found this testimonial quote from that Russian, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn:

says, “”Over a half century ago, while I was still a child, I recall hearing a number of old people offer the following explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: ‘Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened. Since then I have spent well-nigh 50 years working on the history of our revolution; in the process I have read hundreds of books, collected hundreds of personal testimonies, and have already contributed eight volumes of my own toward the effort of clearing away the rubble left by that upheaval. But if I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat:

‘Men have forgotten God; that’s why all this has happened.”

Solzhenitsyn also said, WAY back in the 70’s, that America was “deChristianized.” And he added that American people suffered from a “decline in courage” and a “lack of manliness.” What?! Apparently he wasn’t aware of America’s obvious toxic masculinity.

And get this. Aleksandr also criticized and accused the Western news media of left-wing bias. And he said the media just worked to fill up the “immortal souls” of their audience with celebrity gossip and other “vain talk.” I guess he just didn’t understand their superhuman skills of tolerance and celebration of diversity.

That Russian knew then, what most Americans don’t know NOW. By the way, Mr. Solzhenitsyn would be 104 today, December 11, if he was still alive. And if he WAS still alive, he’d see it’s still true that…

Nothin’s Sacred Anymore

Take the truth and lock it up, and throw away the key.
Winds of change are blowing foul; a dance with destiny.
Blur the face of love and sex and say it’s all OK.
Tell the child it’s just a choice and melt her soul away.

Nothin’s sacred anymore…
Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core?
Nothin’s sacred anymore…
And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door?
Nothin’s sacred anymore

Cast your vote for social growth and then say yes to law.
Keep the peace, divide the wealth; the vision Adolph saw.
Hedge the bets and ride the fence; the middle road’s secure.
Then one day you’re head to head with all you must endure.

Nothin’s sacred anymore…
Can’t we learn from mistakes when they cut to the core?
Nothin’s sacred anymore…
And should we be surprised since we’ve opened that dark, wide door?
Nothin’s sacred anymore

More, more space and time.
More would be sublime.
Someone else can pay
Long as I get mine today.

Ain’t nothin’ sacred anymore.

Lords a leaping and mind sweeping

Here’s another one of those connections I mentioned recently. This time it’s a very slight connection between the ten lords a leaping you’re hearing everywhere you go right now, and a poet.

He’s not the poet who wrote “ten lords a leaping.”

But he’s still a very famous poet who lived from 1809 to 1892. He came from a large family. And that’s putting it mildly. 11 brothers and sisters. And I’ve read that all of them had at least one severe mental breakdown. One of the brothers couldn’t beat his addiction to drugs. Another brother was put in an insane say for most of his life. And still another brother was confined once in a while, because of alcoholism, and died fairly young.

And yet the guy I’m talking about became a poet. Even a poet laureate.

And that’s in spite of the fact that he believed he inherited epilepsy from his father. He believed that condition caused him to fall into trances now and then.

Yeah, his life seemed to be troubled, to say the least. But he still wrote poetry that professors, teachers, and students study to this day. That includes me. I remember reading and discussing his works in high school.

What I don’t recall in those high school discussions is how, as a boy, this poet would think up lines and phrases and then memorize them till he could find a way to put them in a poem. Apparently it was more important to him to be sure the rhythm and language flowed the way he wanted than to clarify a message.

Also, he used writing as a tool to focus on life instead of the troubles of life.

And I can totally relate to those descriptions. They sound a lot like my writing style. My gigantic collection of spiral notebooks, through the decades, prove what I’m talking about. But it’s starting to sound like I forgot about the lords a leaping connection. So, here it is.

The poet I’m talking about was Alfred Lord Tennyson. His poem, Charge of the Light Brigade was published on this day, December 9, back in 1854. Now, your mission is not to question why. Your mission is to do or die. Well, don’t do the die part till you read this beautiful poem by a possible leaping lord.

Strong Son of God, Immortal Love

Strong Son of God, immortal Love,
Whom we, that have not seen thy face,
By faith, and faith alone, embrace,
Believing where we cannot prove;

Thine are these orbs of light and shade;
Thou madest Life in man and brute;
Thou madest Death; and lo, thy foot
Is on the skull which thou hast made.

Thou wilt not leave us in the dust:
Thou madest man, he knows not why,
He thinks he was not made to die;
And thou hast made him: thou art just.

Thou seemest human and divine,
The highest, holiest manhood, thou:
Our wills are ours, we know not how;
Our wills are ours, to make them thine.

And our little systems have their day;
They have their day and cease to be:
They are but broken lights of thee,
And thou, O Lord, art more than they.

We have but faith: we cannot know;
For knowledge is of things we see;
And yet we trust it comes from thee,
A beam in darkness: let it grow.

Let knowledge grow from more to more,
But more of reverence in us dwell;
That mind and soul, according well,
May make one music as before,

But vaster. We are fools and slight;
We mock thee when we do not fear:
But help thy foolish ones to bear;
Help thy vain worlds to bear thy light.

Forgive what seem’d my sin in me;
What seem’d my worth since I began;
For merit lives from man to man,
And not from man, O Lord, to thee.

Forgive my grief for one removed,
Thy creature, whom I found so fair.
I trust he lives in thee, and there
I find him worthier to be loved.

Forgive these wild and wandering cries,
Confusions of a wasted youth;
Forgive them where they fail in truth,
And in thy wisdom make me wise.   ~Alfred Lord Tennyson

Make the connections from different directions

I can make the connections from some quirky directions sometimes. They’re not always important. And often they’re probably only interesting to me. This might be one of those times. But a couple of unrelated articles connected in the eccentric region of my brain this morning. And I’m gonna share a little of what the U.S. Mint has in common with rock music.

If you don’t make the connections, that’s OK.

Feel free to believe it comes from a life of drugs, sex, and rock-n-roll. That’s the polar opposite of the truth. But feel free to believe it.

Anyway…

A few years further back than I can even remember, the U.S. Mint, in Philadelphia, produced 1,758 of the first silver dollars ever. From what I’ve read, there are probably only about 130 of the left. So, that makes ’em rare and valuable.

In fact, it might have been the very first one of those silver dollars that sold for a record $10 million in 2013. It’s a coin that features Lady Liberty on one side, and it’s also called the “Flowing Hair” dollar.

So, there’s a nice investment tip for you. If you have one of those silver dollars, you could turn it into millions. Boom! One coin. One nice retirement nest egg.

But how’s that all connected to rock music, you might ask?

Well, a songwriter, who also was a co-founder of a very famous southern rock band, wrote a song called “Midnight Rider.” It was supposedly about a fictional character. And, from what I’ve read about the origin of the song, it was more than a little influenced by some sort of burning weed.

But, now, here’s how I make the connections.

That songwriter I mentioned was Gregg Allman. He was a member and co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band. And he wrote “Midnight Rider.” Gregg was easily recognized by his long, flowing hair. And the lyrics mention, in every verse, how the midnight rider’s “got one more silver dollar.”

So, pretty cool connection. Right?

Gregg Allman died in 2017 from complications of liver cancer. I didn’t know him personally. So, I have no idea where he is now. Yes, I know that sounds weird to people who think your days here on Earth are all you’re gonna have. But Gregg IS somewhere right now.

But more importantly, to the whole connections thing, is the fact that today, December 8, marks his birthday. He’d be 75.

Here’s a link to a video of the song Midnight Rider, performed by Gregg Allman, Zac Brown, and Vince Gill. Copy and paste the link. I really like the song and its mournful, bluesy feel.

Well, I’ve got to run to keep from hidin’
And I’m bound to keep on ridin’
And I’ve got one more silver dollar
But I’m not gonna let ’em catch me, no
Not gonna let ’em catch the midnight rider

God made trees that sway in the breeze

God made trees. Sure, I’m stating the obvious. But the obvious isn’t so obvious to the oblivious. So, even if you don’t believe the Bible, I have poetic proof of God’s hand in the creation of trees.

First, did you ever hear the hit song, “A Boy Named Sue,” from Johnny Cash? It’s about a guy whose dad named him Sue so he’d have to either get tough or get whooped. Boy, talk about toxic masculinity. These days, that guy’s dad would be tossed in a padded cell for child abuse. OR he’d be celebrated as progressive for transgendering his boy. Yeesh.

Anyway…

The song was written by one of my favorite writers, Shel Silverstein. And it tells the story of how “Sue” hates his name and vows to kill the man who named him. As a grown man, he finally meets his dad in a bar. And they fight. And just as they pull guns on each other, the dad tells his son why he named him Sue. Then, yada yada, they make up.

So. There you go. God made trees.

Oh wait. I left something out. Let’s see. What was it? Oh yeah, I remember. Another guy had to go through his life with a girl’s name. But he didn’t vow to kill the man who named him. At least I can’t find any evidence that he did. And, in fact, he did something a guy with a girl’s name should probably never do. He wrote poetry. Yikes!

There are those (and I won’t single you out) who’d like to ridicule a guy with a girl’s name for writing poetry. And those people would like you to believe that guy would certainly have to be light in his loafers. But those people wouldn’t take the time to discover how that guy with a girl’s name, who wrote poetry, enlisted to fight in World War 1.

And they wouldn’t care to find out how that guy with a girl’s name was married, had five kids, and was killed in battle. Nope. They’d just laugh at a guy named Joyce.

But Joyce, whose last name was Kilmer, provided the poetic proof that God made trees. In his famous poem…

Trees

I think that I shall never see
A poem as lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.  ~Joyce Kilmer

There you go. Cased closed. Take that all you unprogressive progressives.

Stay tuned,

Three weeks from yesterday I will still have this to say

2022 has been a mighty fast year. I mean, it’s difficult to think it’s already three weeks from yesterday till Christmas. Of course, it’s not like you don’t see evidence for Christmas for literally months in advance. It’s just so odd to think it’s already here again. And that’s still a really good thing, too.

Because, for the next three weeks, the whole world knows.

Whether they like it or not, they can’t deny there was somebody, somewhere, who sure left a lasting impression in this world. And that’s the understatement of the century.

Jesus left an impression in this world that will never be totally erased. Never. Well, at least not until this whole planet is erased. But that’s another story for another time.

Right now, I’m just gonna start my annual Tony Sings Christmas Music extravaganza. Christmas music I’ve sung (and even written) will be heading your way for the next three weeks. And usually I save this song for last. But this year, I’m makin’ it first. Because…

I Believe In The God of Christmas

Some believe there’s just today.
And then we die and fade away…
Such a sad and hopeless life to lead.

Others say we never die.
We all live on above the sky…
Disregard the theft and hate and greed.

But I believe in the God of Christmas,
And I believe in His Gift to us all,
And I believe that He died to save us
And that He rose to recover our fall.
Yes I believe in the God who loves us,
And I believe in the God who lives,
Yes I believe in the God of Christmas.
He gave His love, and He still freely gives.

One day soon we just may find
So many millions left behind
In a world where truth is torn apart.

Then no lights, no Christmas trees,
No arts and no humanities,
Will bring peace to any broken heart.
